  • Hutt, PC George

    Guys,

For anyone who has read the latest Ripperologist magazine (103).

Attached is are some images connected to our (Rob and myself) article on City PC George Hutt.

The first is an exterior shot of Smithfield Market, taken from Farringdon Street C 1904. Those that have read the article will remember Hutt became a PC there in 1889.

The second is an interior shot taken in 1896. The eagle eyed out there may note the two Police Constables in the distance. Its possible one of the two PCs in the distance is Hutt as he was there until 1906.

Many thanks to Rob Clack for these fantastic images.

    Hi Monty,

Splendid article from you and Rob Clack, rounding out Hutt for us, and you've shown him to be a very interesting man. His letter to the editor in defense of the Jews speaks greatly to his character and yet he's got what was apparently a serious case of assault against him. I wonder who the prisoner was and what the circumstances were.

I like that he and Kate Eddowes had something in common, in a minor way, I guess: a history of going AWOL, fibbing, and drunkeness

    Cheers,
    Dave

      Thanks Dave,

Yes, Hutt does seem to be a contradiction. However, who isnt?

He came from a fairly respectable family with father George senior and sons entering into the world of Insurance, including Hutt himself. Then he breaks away and joins the Army, becomes a warehouseman and eventually a PC. He certainly had a varied working life.

The assault is certainly curious but the report reads that he attacked a prisoner in the dock of Moor Lane station. I suspect there was provocation however theres no evidence of that.

Hutt isnt the only one who has a connection with Eddowes. There are more revelations to come, including one that will seriously challenge peoples perceptions, it did mine.

We have merely scratched the surface.

        Hi Monty

I was just wondering if anyone had ever thought of doing a book about the policeman involved in the Jack the Ripper investigation?

          Hi Jeff,

Well there is Nick Connell and Stewart Evans 'The Man who hunted Jack the Ripper', about Edmund Reid, which stands out as a must have book in my opinion.

There is a revised edition due out very soon which, I believe, is larger and more packed that the previous issues.

Other than that, and Dews work, I cant think of a book that specifically targets the PCs involved in the case.

          Cheers

Since my perceptions are that this murder is the one within the Canonicals that meets the required Ripper elements but has curious ancillary data that hints at possibilities that include rendezvous Monty, Id be thrilled to hear what you fellas have in mind here.

I dont think I can recall another murder Ive looked at that has almost all of the relevant witness data coming from cops, and has no fewer than 7 policeman factoring into the story of the first 15 minutes after her death. The 3 Detectives searching nearby streets, Watkins, Harvey, Pearce with his vantage point, and Morris....with an open door.

              All the best Monty.

Sorry mate, only deal in English.

Im not going to spill the beans as it were, nor am I going to say if that happend with Eddowes. However there is evidence that a person who worked for the City of London Police force may have sometimes liased with prostitutes. That is not to say they used their services I add.

Fair enough my friend. You know my spin on these nights well enough to know Im agreeable to "outside the Ripper" explanations, so I look forward to ideas "fore or agin".

I wondered whether there was any detailed description made of her pockets contents as she was booked or as they were returned to her just before 1am. Basically I'm curious because she is found with a table knife on her.

Did your research reveal that detail in relation to Hutt?

                      Best regards Monty.

New entry on Chris George's blog here at Casebook:

"City P.C. George H. Hutt, Police Poet, and the Issue of Horse Cruelty"

My thanks to Robert Linford for his help with researching this, and particularly in regard to the article he found in the Illustrated Police News on a case of horse cruelty in which P.C. John Pegg testified. P.C. Pegg is partly the subject of Hutt's poem, "A Horse's Letter" which can be read on the blog.

Thanks, Monty. I will indeed look out for the docu featuring George Hutt's descendant. Marvellous stuff. And once again I have to put in a compliment to you and Rob for doing such an excellent job in researching the careers of the different "coppers" involved in the case... you have made them come alive to us.

I think Rob will agree that we own a debt of thanks to others who helped along the way both in the field and out of it.

Hutt was probably one of the most enjoyable we did as there was a wealth of info. We could have gone on with his 'writings' but decided to stick to his career. And the indentification of his photo was a moment I particularly enjoyed.
