The first choke is very similar to the rear naked choke, although he’s using his forearm to apply pressure to the windpipe and not the wrist like we do in Judo, but it’s very close.
The rear choke is the best way to do it, once it’s on it’s on and it’s very hard to escape. A front choke you’d have to have the victim backed up against a wall or they would probably manage to break free.
The middle picture is common in MMA and it’s more of a strangle as pressure is applied to the sides on the neck and this cuts off blood to the the brain. A strangle like this would leave much less damage. However, although it looks easy it requires some skill / knowledge to do it. I don’t think many would use the technique unless they had been shown it.
The bottom picture you have the kind of choke that would be done from the front except i would think using both hands would be required to realistically choke out someone who was fighting for their life. I also think the choke from the front would leave thumb prints and maybe even small cuts from fingernails. This for me is the type of choke that somebody untrained would do and therefore most likely how JTR would have done it, if indeed he did choke his victims first.
My feeling is that the autopsy would provide answers as I think a frontal choke would leave more evidence. It would be interesting to know how strangulation was detected on the victims, and what the neck injuries were.
