organised serials: The act of killing itself or the changes it fosters are the goal. This beeing said, the primary concern is effectiveness and readiness. the presentation to an outside observer is that of realitive stability because organized serials maintain enough of a connection with reality and enough understanding of their actions to realise that experimentation is a high risk manuever for him. He does not have a loyalty to the weapon per se, but to the function. When organized serials experiment with weapon, typically great pains are taken to insure seemless function without raising the potential for detection.
disorganized serials: The method of attack and weapon are subject to the fantasy in the killers mind and are not grounded in our conception of reality. Disorganized serials learn from experince and also vary weapon and mode of attack to suit the changing fantasy within their own mind, as such the appear as risk averse indivduals. Changes in M.O. can result from either experiental or psychological stimuli. When method appears as stable to the outside viewer, it is invariably a function of method being in the relatively stable ( non experimental ) portion of the killers fantasy. This type of killer need not have killing or mutilation as a goal in and of itself, his goal is gratification. Just exactly what the killer finds gratifying is entirely within his own mind and unattainable to outside viewers save for the killer disclosing them, ( a diary, interrogation, confidential communication, trial ect...).
These are the understandings presented in Universities now, but are of course subject to change as our data grows and different perspectives are rendered. It is good to have faith in our modern understandings, but one should remember that before the mid 1980's studies of serial behavior was practically non existent. Hope this helps.
