Hi Neil, because I'm inclined to believe DC Halse rather than Warren. Plus, the Met would have asked the people of the Dwellings, and if only one person had said "yes, I've seen this message yesterday", the Met, knowing they were being criticized, would have been too happy to record it.

Ah, so its assumption that leads you to this conclusion.

That they did inquire in the Wentworth Model Dwellings is hardly an assumption. They did ask them about the graffito, that's certain.

I'm just telling you what I find more likely on the subject, Neil, and since the Met was criticized by the City Police for the erasure, they would have been pleased to prove them wrong.

Warren would have simply been too happy if he could have said : "the people living there told us that the message was already there prior to the murder" instead of his mere : "it was blurred" - which DC Halse contested.

            Monty!

I am not sure that I like the rounding off you supply all your posts with nowadays. The "I saw a dead fish ..." thing, I mean.

I find it slightly unnerving, for some peculiar reason.

But Monty, as I said in my post that you quoted back to me, the apron piece was picked up and taken away. So the words would have been 'by themselves' had they not been erased to prevent the very reaction you don't think they would have drawn 'by themselves'.

                covered

Hello Caroline. Picking up on that, I have always wondered about the suggestion that it be covered until photographed, THEN expunged.

Perhaps that had been safe enough?

                Cheers.

Warren- as far as this episode is concerned- is a bit of an enigma. He was acting on the advice of Arnold, who had just recently returned to duty, but was certainly aware of the 'Leather Apron' scare. He also claimed that the graffito was difficult to cover and easily seen by passersby. Yet if it was written in the size that it was claimed to be, it would not be easily read unless someone was very close to it.

However, he was decisive at a time when many others might vacillate. It was a difficult call to make, considering the ramifications he had to know that would follow in the wake of his decision.

A previous poster has commented that the news of the graffito was soon known anyway. While there was one press report to that effect soon after the news of the apron was published, the press report, itself, discounted it as rumor. The actual truth about the graffiti wasn't public knowledge until October 12, when Halse finally gave his testimony at the Eddowes inquest on the day before.
                  Best Wishes,
                  Hunter

Hello Cris. Thanks. I think Warren made the right choice. But could not a constable or two keep everyone away until photographed?

                    Cheers.

                      When discovered they were not.

Therefore the apron lends power to the writing.

                        Hi All,

I feel a bit sorry for PC 191H who had to single-handedly guard the GSG from the eyes of any passing riot-minded Jews whilst the perspicacious PC Long dashed off to the police station with the piece of apron he found a good twenty minutes before anyone knew it was missing.

                        Regards,

                        Simon
