  • "Wrote them herself" (hoax letters)

From the Aspen Evening Chronicle, January 31, 1889 (Aspen, Colorado) :

    "Wrote Them Herself."
    "Special to The Chronicle."
"LONDON, Jan. 30 -- Margaret Thompson, who for the past month has kept the police of Manchester wildly excited over letters which purported to be written by Jack the Ripper, addressed to her, has confessed she wrote them herself. The love of notoriety is apparently the cause."

Is this the same young woman who received a stiff punishment for writing hoax letters I've heard of elsewhere, or another one?

    Hi Pat

The woman convicted of writing Jack the Ripper letters was Maria Coroner of Bradford, age 21. She was a Canadian born milliner and dressmaker who resided at 77 Westgrove Street. So evidently the case of Margaret Thompson is a different case, later than the Coroner case which was in October 1888. It would be interesting to know if Thompson was similarly brought to trial and whether she too was convicted.

    Best regards

      Thanks for the information.
Time to hit the Manchester papers, perhaps!
