Yes, but is it callous behaviour then???

Fear of touching the dead in general.
Fear of being attacked if drunk woman came to once moved.
Fear of disease - touch blood, being scratched, bitten.
Fear of losing your job if you got involved (delayed with cops).

I'm thinking we lay too much on these two guys.
I'm trying hard to be in their shoes.

It's not just being scratched or bitten. I expect long term homeless had more than their fair share of fleas and lice.

To my knowledge, neither police nor the press found the two carmen callous.

        hi books and fiver
the ancient greeks had a beautiful saying.Do whats right and let the skies fall.

Their actions were callous and uncaring.

but i do understand your reasons for not wanting to touch her. still at the very least one could have stayed with her while the other fetched help.

Maybe two issues were at play:

          1) these carmen could have seen drunks and people sleeping rough nearly every commute to work. They became desensitized to the sight.
          2) real fear of losing their jobs if they were late, so neither could risk that and stay behind.

And I figure they were vague with Mizen so he wouldn't delay them either. A job loss could, they might fear, put them in the state of the woman they just found - sleeping rough with no hope.
