Wilf Gregg, RIP

I'm deeply saddened to announce that Wilf Gregg, one of the country's leading true crime experts, died on Sunday 11 June after a short illness.

As well as being a contributing editor to Ripperologist for a number of years, Wilf will have been known to many of you through the Whitechapel Society and the UK Ripper conferences.

A full obituary will appear in issue 93 of Ripperologist.

Hi all,

Adam thanks for bringing this up to our attention. I never had any contact with Mr. Gregg, but I knew of him through Jon Goodman. They were close friends.

As was said, this was a bad year.

The obituary notice was good, but it made an error. The 1849 murder was committed by Frederick George Manning and his wife MARIA Manning, not Eliza
Manning. But that would be a point most people would not have noted (though Mr. Gregg might have).

Also Gregg's purchase of the Notable British Trial volume on the trial of John Watson Laurie is one of the volumes edited by William Roughead, so it is easy to see why Gregg was fascinated by the writing.
