  • Pedlar Palmer

On this page: https://www.whippfamily.co.uk/Life%2...r%20Palmer.htm accessed at the time of creating this post, we find the following quote:

'Pedlar' admitted in later life later that he took a bribe to lose the fight with Jim Williams for the English title on the 27th June 1902.
The problem with this is Pedlar Palmer didn't fight Jim Williams on 27th of June, 1902. Pedlar Palmer fought Jim Williams twice in 1902.

27th of January, 1902 - which he lost.

23rd of October, 1902 - which he won.

It can only be the fight on 27th of January which fits the description of the fixed fight. The date is right but it's the wrong month. I can see how someone would mistake Jan for June.

Here's a report of the fight from The Sportsman - Tuesday 28 January 1902:

    Was it a fix?

I'd love to find another source for Pedlar Palmer's confession about a fixed fight...
