  • Bruce Goldfarb, public information officer for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Maryland, will give a talk at RipperCon on "The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death." These extraordinary miniature dollhouse-size dioramas of death were created by "Frances Glessner Lee, who is widely believed to have been the inspiration for Jessica Fletcher, the character played by Angela Lansbury in 'Murder, She Wrote.' During the 1940s and 1950s, in a farmhouse in New Hampshire, Lee assembled these scenes of domestic dysfunction with skill and obsessive attention to detail." Quote from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...etectives.html. Today, these dioramas are used to instruct modern-day detectives on crime scene investigation. Mr. Goldfarb's talk will provide the perfect preparation for the Sunday bus tour in which attendees at RipperCon will have the privilege of being able to see the "Nutshell Studies" at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in person!

Deadline to sign up for RipperCon is March 15. Complete information on the event is available at RipperCon.com.

      • RipperCon speaker Michael L. Hawley announces the upcoming publication of The Ripper's Haunts. Mike is hoping to have copies available in time for his talk at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore during RipperCon April 8-10. For full information on the event, see http://RipperCon.com. Note March 15 deadline!

The Ripper’s Haunts is a compilation of Hawley’s research, much already published in Ripperologist, the Whitechapel Society Journal, and Casebook Examiner, plus new finds scheduled to be presented at RipperCon on suspect Dr. Francis Tumblety. These findings pertain both to Tumblety as a contemporary suspect in the Whitechapel murder case and the viability of him actually being Jack the Ripper. Of note is the macabre wax museum that operated just yards away from the Nichols murder site, in which the proprietor callously showcased explicit wax models of the fiend’s victims, presented to the public just hours after each untimely death. Also discussed is the clandestine police investigation that was being quietly pursued, based upon a Dr. Jekyll – Mr. Hyde theory that the killer was harvesting female organs in his quest to create an elixir of life. Actor-producer Richard Mansfield’s "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" was showing at the famous Lyceum Theatre in London during the 1888 Autumn of terror; incredibly, the employees of the theatre were members of an organization who were also in search of the precious elixir.

Just wondering, Brian. Do you have the build and muscles to be a boxing commentator?

                        • Hi all

Interesting interview with RipperCon speaker Michael Hawley in the Buffalo Spree. Mike besides being a writer on the Ripper case is a high school science teacher and a Christian evangelical but nonethless a believer in evolution.

"Into the raging battle between religious belief and scientific reasoning rides a peacemaker carrying a bible in one hand and an Archaeopteryx fossil in the other. His name is Michael Hawley, and as an evolution-defending evangelical Christian, he’s something of a walking oxymoron. The retired U.S. Navy commander and aviator is currently enjoying a second career as a science teacher at Tonawanda City High School. Armed with an extensive knowledge of biblical scripture, Hawley claims that religious belief and science are compatible, at least where it comes to the book of Genesis. . . . His reasoned arguments on the evolution/creationism dispute are outlined in his first book, Searching for Truth with a Broken Flashlight (Aventine Press). In a clear, personal, non-confrontational style, Hawley defines the differences between the scientific process and religious dogma, clearing up many misconceptions about both along the way."

                          • Trending #1 on #T2Q: "Q-on-2 talking #JackTheRipper & #RipperCon 2016"

If you have not yet caught it, RipperCon Long Island Serial Killer (LISK) speaker Robert Anderson and I recorded a podcast interview with Quincy of the Talk 2 Q Radio Show to chat about RipperCon in Baltimore, April 8-10. The podcast also features an appearance by Buffalo native Brian Young (aka Steadmund Brand). To listen, go to alturl.com/buudf.

The revised deadline to sign up for RipperCon is March 31. Time is getting short! If you are interested in attending, do so now!

Speaker Sarah Beth Hopton (Mary Pearcey/Jill the Ripper) has had to withdraw from the event. Instead attendees are going to be treated to a presentation on forensic science by Charles Tumosa, lecturer in the University of Baltimore (UB) School of Criminal Justice Forensic Studies program. When I approached Charlie about speaking at RipperCon, he remarked, "Sure, why not. I've been a fan of Victorian crime for a long time." For more on his views on criminal investigation, see "The Art of Investigation: Painting a Picture of Applied Forensics" by Paula Novash (University of Baltimore Magazine, Summer 2011). Also a video interview with Charlie about forensic investigation of art at https://vimeo.com/52946678.

                            • RipperCon co-organizer Janis Wilson will appear on the Investigation Discovery Channel tonight at 10:00 pm talking about "Evil Stepmothers." It will probably be aired again at 5:00 pm Saturday. Check it out!

Janis is a Baltimore-based Ripperologist and author of Goulston Street, which is expected to be available in 2016. A former newspaper reporter and trial lawyer, Wilson took the Ripper Tour in Whitechapel some years ago conducted by Donald Rumbelow. The tour allowed Janis to appreciate how the world-famous slayer managed to repeatedly escape capture. After extensive study of the Ripper, Janis taught a course at Temple University in Philadelphia about his exploits. In addition, she has lectured on the Ripper on several occasions and continues studying the literature about him. In addition to her writing career, Janis is a commentator about true crime for the Investigation Discovery Channel and has appeared on such programs as “Deadly Affairs” and the “Nightmare Next Door.”
