Happy Days Fish and Chip Restaurant on Goulston Street will be shortly undergoing a refit. The premises will be redecorated to reflect its historic significance, with period pictures and decorations.
Owner Michael Papastavrou is hosting a special re-launch on the evening of 30th September 2014, to start at 5.30 pm, with refreshments and an unique unveiling.
The date is obviously of prime significance for this address, it being the anniversary of the ‘Double Event’ when a piece of Catherine Eddowes’ apron as found in what is now the doorway to the restaurant, underneath some graffiti that read ‘The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing.’
All those involved in the ‘Ripper’ industry and close associates are cordially invited to what will undoubtedly be a memorable occasion.

‘Jack the Ripper’ Fish and Chip Restaurant hosts re-launch event

On the 126th anniversary of the notorious ‘Double Event’ - Tuesday 30th September 2014 - Happy Days Fish and Chip Restaurant, 44-46 Goulston Street, Whitechapel, London E1 7TP is hosting a re-launch reception – from 5.30 pm.

The proprietor of Happy Days Restaurant, Michael Papastavrou has arranged for his premises to be refurbished to reflect a Victorian look and feel, to cater for the ever growing number of hungry Jack the Ripper tourists. They will be tucking into his delicious Fish and Chips (with other dishes available as well) alongside his regular clientele of City workers, Petticoat Lane shoppers and local residents.

The so-called ‘Double Event’ was when Jack the Ripper cruelly and viciously killed two victims, about an hour, and three quarters of a mile apart: Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes. The doorway to the Restuarant was where a portion of Catherine Eddowes’s apron was found in the early hours of the morning on 30th September 1888, under some mysterious chalk graffiti that read ‘The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing’.

This is one of the only pieces of tangible evidence found by the police at the time. And the building where this doorway can still be found, is one of the few remaining structures that can be directly linked to these horrific crimes.

In 1888 what is now known as 44-46 Goulston Street was called 108-119 Wentworth Model Dwellings. Owner Michael Papastavrou, who previously ran a highly regarded Greek Cypriot restaurant in Finsbury Park, North London, first opened a take away in Goulston Street as far back as 1981, at number 44. Around 2007 Michael expanded his business and took over number 46 and opened the sit down Fish and Chip Restaurant. Most aficionados will tell you that these are the best fish and chips in the East End!

The refurbished venue will lend itself to be used for dinner-talk functions, book launches and so forth. It is to be regretted that the hundreds – thousands – of tourists who come to this part of the East End to participate in Ripper tours come in and go out with barely spending any of their tourist Dollars and Euros in the area (apart from what they pay the tour guides). Hopefully this will start to change!
