Deposits now being taken!

We’re delighted to announce that the website for the 2019 East End Conference is now live.

We’ve added an extra daytime speaker - making a total of 7 - and we’re pleased to report that there will also be an evening event on the Saturday in conjunction with our friends from the Whitechapel Society.

Not only have we added more speakers, we’ve also reduced the cost from £60 to £50 per person!

As in previous years we expect places to go quickly, and advise placing a deposit as soon as possible.

Five of the seven daytime speakers are already confirmed, and will be announced shortly.

THE HISTORY OF THE WHITECHAPEL VICTIMS’ PHOTOGRAPHS
The victim photographs are the only surviving physical evidence of the Whitechapel murders case. This lecture is a fascinating journey of why the photos were taken, and the man behind the camera entrusted with the gruesome task; how they were lost from the official files and later rediscovered; why they were published in France seven decades before being published in England; and the possibility of more photographs of the victims, even in life.

Robert McLaughlin is the author of ‘The First Jack the Ripper Victim Photographs’, one of the most sought-after books in Ripperology. He is a regular contributor to the Rippercast podcast, and a speaker on historical true crime and The Whitechapel murders. Robert is self-employed, active in theatre, and currently resides in Alberta, Canada. A fully revised edition of his book will be published in 2020 by Mango Books.

This week saw what would have been our dear friend Katherine Amin’s 39th birthday, to mark this we are proud to announce that the outstanding achievement award will, from this year onwards, be named in her honour. The Katherine Amin Award for Outstanding Contribution will be presented this October at the 2019 East End Conference in London. We would like to thank her husband Nathen who has given his blessing for the renaming of the award.

Adventures in Ripperology: a cautionary tale from the academe

Having recently co-written their own solution to the Whitechapel and Thames Torso mysteries, Drew Gray and Andy Wise will discuss the research behind their new book (“Jack and the Thames Torso Murders”) and the merits of their chosen suspect.
Drew will also talk about the process of writing, the challenges faced, and the perils of entering the strange world of Ripperology. He will reflect on the reaction to this book (and others penned by those that might be deemed as ‘outsiders’), and how we might all learn to love each other a little more.
Copies of JACK AND THE THAMES TORSO MURDERS will be available to buy after the talk.
This talk will be hosted by the Whitechapel Society as their after-dinner event on the evening of Saturday 5th October. It is free for conference delegates to attend.
