Just thought I'd remind people about this conference in late October. I haven't been in Philly since I was a child, and I'm looking forward to being there again. I'm also very much looking forward to meeting Howard Brown and Martin Fido.

Has anyone checked out the rates at the suggested hotel (Palomar) in Philly? Am I imagining things or are they (choke!) rather high?

I'll be speaking as well, so will look forward to meeting you. Yes I suppose the hotel might be a bit on the steep side but not high for a top Philly, D.C. or NY hotel I think. I may only need to stay one night (Friday).

I didn't know you were speaking at the conference, Chris. That will be an added treat. My wife is coming with me and she's never been to Philadelphia, so we're staying a couple of extra nights so she can have a look around the town. And, if you say the Palomar is charging the going rate, that's good enough for me.

Here is information I've received from Fred Abbate on what I will be contributing to the conference:

"I'm really pleased to tell you that your outline as a panel participant at our Drexel University Jack the Ripper Through a Wider Lens Conference has been accepted. The panel topic is 'Images of the Ripper' and we know your presentation on early theatrical depictions of the Whitechapel killer will be a great contribution.

"Paula Marantz Cohen, my co-chair for the Conference, and I really look forward to seeing you in October. For your information, we have paired you on the panel with John Curra, Professor of Sociology at Eastern Kentucky University, who will speak on 'Seriality, Sexuality and Murder: Jack the Ripper as Folk Devil.'

"I have no doubt that the dialog will be extremely interesting. You should plan to speak for 15 or so minutes to allow as much time as possible for questions and comments. Since the deadline for submission of papers is September 6, we will certainly let you know if we install a third panelist."

I stand corrected. The rate at the Palomar for this conference is US$199. A bargain. I was looking at their usual rate for the same room which is a little over 500 bucks. My compliments to the conference organizers for arranging that deal.

Excellent conference

What a great conference Drexel put on!! Nineteen speakers and not a boring one among them. The best, of course, were our own Chris George and Martin Fido. And, I'm telling you, if you look "charm" up in the dictionary, it will probably say, "see, Howard Brown".
