  • Back in Time - Your Chance..

No doubt this has been asked before and it's something I personally am not sure how I would go about it.

Basically you can go back to Whitechapel at the time of the JtR murders armed with a video camera/digital camera and are only allowed to visit ONE venue for one day before returning to 2016.

Importantly you are not allowed to interfere with what happens so sorry no changing 'history' as such.

You are only allowed to try to answer one piece of the puzzle, maybe something important to you or something you really wish to know beyond any doubt. The thing that would make it all click into place for you....

For example do you wish to photograph Jack in the act of one specific murder? Do you want to know for sure it was Mary in that room? Do you want to photograph the Graffiti artist?

It's your chance, what do you wish to know and 'record' from Autumn 1888?

    Nice little brain teaser,

If we could change things then it would be stop the first, thereby saving the rest and stopping the Ripper from existing.

    |Given that is not the aim, to be in one of the empty houses in Mitre Square, night camera all ready. Of course if the killer is someone who is not known by photo that hardly helps, so may need to ask a friend to do their trip to Mitre Square, while I go a snap my preferred suspect.

guess I would not be allowed to follow him home, at a distance of course.

Whichever, the key for me is Mitre Square, I may even see the elusive sighting by a policeman, if it took place.

Since we cannot stop anything from occurring, I'd park myself outside Mary's address at Dorset Street, and start the camera as Jack was leaving, making sure he saw me, and saw me gradually disappear with a record of his leaving that location. Maybe it would drive him to suicide or final mental breakdown.

Off the topic idea: Since I can't do anything I'd invite August Le Prince and William Friese-Greene to meet me at Goulston Street, show them proof of my coming from the future, and allow them to see the camera, and then shoot the miscreant writing the graffito (they'd be with me in a hiding spot) and photographing who he is.

        Jeff,
my only concern with Waiting outside #13 is that it is possible, unlikely i think, but possible, that it was a different killer.

what time are you going to Goulston Street, if its not by the killer, it may be there when you arrive, that at least would put that debate to bed.

Would I be invisible to the Ripper and others? I would really like to see who deposited the apron at the Wentworth buildings in Goulston St. However, I don't really fancy my chances, as a lone female, of not being molested or attacked before Jack got there or by the man himself if I was hanging about in the early hours with something valuable like a video camera (even if locals didn't know what it was!)

Couldn't all the members of the Forum go together to Buck's Row and then after the murder go in various directions in pairs to see how Jack got away before Lechmere and Paul got there?

I'd park in the corner of Mitre Square. I want to know which direction he came from, how he removed the kidney in the dark and what the hell George Morris was doing? Also, what direction he left with the apron.

I'd place myself outside 29 Hanbury St from midnight. Then be in place to record comings and goings for the whole night/early morning. Follow any couple who go into 29 Hanbury St from 3.30am onwards. Get a record of the murder, the appearance of the murderer, his escape, and record what all the other witnesses around 29 Hanbury St saw/heard at the time.

Where would you place yourself to do the recording, Billiou? In the passageway near the door? Because there's a good chance that Jack retreated in exactly that direction straight after the murder and exited out of 29's front door.

That is a good choice after Mitre Square, probably my second choice.

However I might position myself at the end of the backyard, or maybe in the cellar. just in case they don't come in together, which is always a possibility.

I would assume if you cannot interfere, then you are invisible to those around you.

Mitre Square seems the best option to me. Even if it doesn't sort everything into a tidy package, just seems the best chance for getting the most useful information.
I’m often irrelevant. It confuses people.

I made this exact thread a few years ago. Back then, I answered Mitre Square. I don't remember my exact reasons, but they were likely similar to the ones above.

Today, however, I am clearly headed to Berner Street. I will figure out once and for all if Israel Schwartz is a credible witness and end the interminable Schwartz discussions on Casebook.

I like to think about this question from the perspective of what mysteries can you solve by viewing one murder and one murder alone. The options are, I think, as follows, but let me know if I am missing any.

Lechmere the Ripper: can easily be proven or disproven by watching Polly Nichols get murdered

                            Annie Chapman time of death
                            which Chapman witnesses credible

Stride time of death (also disputed, just not as far apart as Chapman)
                            Which Stride witnesses credible
                            Was Stride's killer interrupted
How was Stride cut/thrown to the ground

Who saw whom in Mitre Square

                            Kelly time of death
                            Is Hutchinson credible

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.
