Medieval monasteries used to maintain their revenue didn't they by showing splinters of wood from the True Cross, Saints' fingers, Christ's foreskin etc. to pilgrims, so I suppose in a way people have always been gullible.
Sadly, I think a modern collector deeply interested in the JRT story but not too knowledgable about it would be willing to pay millions for this object if they were extremely wealthy. I'd love to know the wording of the guarantee provided, though.
