Forensic Photography of C5 Criticism: October 5, 1888 Article

Here's an article from the October 5, 1888 issue of the journal 'Photographic News 'criticizing the police handling of the photography of the Ripper victims.

It singles out Sir Charles Warren for blame.

    Best regards,

Neat find, Archie. It reads like it was written by someone who applied for a job and didn't get it.

    Yours truly,

Hi Tom, thanks. I have another article, but am having trouble uploading it. Maybe because it's a gif.

Give me a few minutes and I'll try again.

        Question re: Uploading Image

Does anybody know why an article I've saved as a jpeg is uploading as a gif that won't display properly?

        Thanks,

          Victorian Photography: Body Clamp

Here's an image I found a long time ago of a Victorian "Body Clamp". I'm sorry I don't seem to have the source recorded.

These clamps were of course hidden behind (living) photographic subjects to hold them completely still. Long exposure times meant any movement would produce blur.

I wonder why the police didn't modify such an apparatus for use while photographing corpses?

          Best regards,

Here you go Bun. Don't know what the problem was as they looked fine, other than a bit on the small side. I've enlarged them a bit.

Thanks for fixing the two articles & uploading them for me Rob. You're a lifesaver.

I've uploaded zillions of articles on Casebook and never had jpegs magically transform into gifs before! Odd.

              Thanks again,
              Bunny

                    Thanks Dave and David.

I can't help wishing the rather prescient writer(s) of these articles had been in a better position to advise the police.

If the police had only understood the key point - that photographs of crime victims can permanently retain clues that might be missed or inadequately examined by those at the crime scene - we would have photographic evidence of the mutilations today.

                    But, alas...

                    Best regards,
                    Archaic
