Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd

According to a review I read on Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the movie was based on material about murders that occurred in the 19th Century. Could Sweeney and Jack have some sort of connection? One of the suspects, although we're not sure if her ever existed, Vassily Konovavov was said to be a barber surgeon, according to an obviously unreliable and out-of-date encyclopedia entry from the 1980's. What do you think?

I started a Sweeney Todd thread under "Shades of Whitechapel" some time ago that has an excellent summary by Sam Flynn of where the legend of Sweeney came from and how it developed.
