  • Jack the Ripper The Musical!

Transport yourself back in time to the cold dark streets of Victorian London, where terror lurks on every corner, and each passing night, may well be your last!

Join What’s in a Name? theatre company as they re-enact the grizzly events of that heated summer in 1888, when Jack the Ripper slashed his first victim.

With the accompaniment of an authentic music hall score, the cast contrast the harsh reality of nineteenth century working class living, with the lively and upbeat tempos of Victorian nightlife.

The show is a culmination of the Year 2 acting and performance students’ two years of training at Peterborough Regional College, and is a wonderful blend of menace, murder and musicality.

So, follow the tragic tail of his victims, and walk in the footsteps of a murderer as you enter the dark underground world of the Ripper himself!

He’ll have you smiling from ear to ear!

What's in a Name? Theatre Company Present Jack the Ripper!

    June 5th and 6th
    The Key Theatre. Peterborough.

    7:30pm

The prostitutes are wearing red satin corsets. Jack is wearing a top hat and cape. Add that to such cheese as "He'll have you smiling from ear to ear" and ...Gee. I feel like rushing right out and seeing this one. I am guessing it's chockful of historical accuracy.

    Let all Oz be agreed;
I need a better class of flying monkeys.

      Ally,

Sure to be a laugh riot, but this was the line that intrigues me: follow the tragic tail of his victims...

Did they leave the R out of trail, use a homophone of tale or is it a reference to the less than callipygian assets of Jack's poor victims?

Whatever, supposedly no one ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American public and it would seem that may apply in England as well. I'm sure folks will leave the theater singing the songs and honing their knives.

          Is this a Prequel?

It's just that the murders were committed over the Autumn, not Summer, other than that, I wouldn't mind following those victims "Tails"
          Regards Mike

Musicals are not documentaries, in case anyone needs a reminder. What a group of young actors do for entertainment purposes isn't the same, and isn't trying to be the same, as what a historian would put into a book for educational purposes.

I don't see any female holding anything, but in the second photo the metal top of a cane being held by the boy is in front of one of the girls in the back and could be mistaken for something she would be holding if it were part of the background instead of the foreground, if that's what you mean.

As quoted from the play itself..."I am aware that we are honoured with a passionaite, sensitive, artistic and need I add ARTICULATE audience, but please sit back and enjoy the scintilating performances of Whitechapel's, nay London's- nay ENGLAND's most revered thespains"

Thankyou kindly....The points have been noted- trail= tale and summer= autumn.

I'm sure if you came to see this "cheese" you could make your own minds up on the historical accuracy of the piece. However it is not a reconstruction of what happened...because as I'm sure you are all aware...NOONE knows exactly what happened. right?

But some real victim/suspect names...Marie, Martha, Druitt etc are used and as I'm sure you're all very aware of...Alice Mckenzie...who was suspected to have been one of Ripper's victims...was brought up in Peterborough itself.

                Hit me.

Well if it came to a toss-up between ho ho ho ripper musicals, or the covers of the 1950s novels showing glamorous young things struck dumb with horror at the sight of Jack's enormous weapon, or the current trend, which seems to be going in the direction of having Mary Jane and her sisters earning their crust by slaving over a small kettle all day doing piles of laundry, or giving al fresco bible readings perhaps, when not singing hymns for their supper or going on hot dates after midnight (as if it would be too shameful if they had been giving Victorian men the kind of services they couldn't get at home), I'm not sure which I'd plump for, to be frank.

                  Love,

                  Caz

Although I am not in favour of JtR being turned in to light entertainment, I happen to know this theatre group quite well and I can guarantee that anyone who does not mind the subject matter will be in for a real treat.

The Key Theatre in Peterborough is also an excellent venue with all seats offering a brilliant view of the stage.

Sorry for pulling up an old thread...but I was curious to see if anyone went to see this and what their opinions were.
