Hi All
I was just thinking about the clothes of the time and that lead me to think about hats.
Remember the 'mad hatter's disease? Mercury poisoning amongst hat makers was rife and I suspect the owners of the hats would have suffered to some degree.
The following might seem like a nutty suggestion/question but here goes...............
I think the hats of the Victorian era were linked to professions, they were certainly associated with class if you take the top hat into consideration, and could help narrow down the suspects.
Peak caps: are associated with military, I think, but what I would like to know is what other hats (for men) were worn for what profession. Of course comfort, defense against the weather may be the reason for the compulsion of wearing a hat, but what profession goes with which hat? Or what sort of people wore what hat?
Sorry I might have broken the rules, in regards to asking a very general question in this thread sorry
