Mass debating on the Ripper - no hard feelings

    Hi all

I wanted to start a (lighthearted) thread to allow us to openly (yet respectfully) discuss all of those little niggles that we all experience from time to time, but specifically in relation to the Ripper case only.

This thread is intended to be similar to the "irritations" thread, but specifically related to the Ripper case only.

    The reason?

Well, I find the "irritations" thread actually irritating... because I want to discuss the Ripper case (that's why I'm here after all) and I find it distracting.

    So, I ask you all...

    what gets your goat?
    what ruffles your feathers?
    what grates your s**t?

    But remember...

    No hard feelings.

None problem but, apologies in advance, I believe that this point has been raised on the other thread..

Obsessive and over-zealous suspectology - People who select a suspect, usually for no good reason, and then try to move heaven and earth to make every event that occurred and everything that was said at that time as being indicative of that person’s guilt, to the extent that they will manipulate the evidence, edit the evidence, make things up and employ bizarre interpretations to achieve it. I know that we could ignore these people and let them have their dishonest fun but I think that it’s important that they are called out and their deceptions are exposed for what they are. We can all disagree on different aspects of the case as they are down to interpretation but we should do it without bias.

    Hear endeth…..

Great post Herlock to kick things off.

I tend to like picking a random person of interest, and then see how they fit (or don't fit) into the picture, so I am sometimes guilty of the above.

What i do like though, is that we all tend to approach the case in our own way, and I think that's a good thing, as it can be good to flush out a particular angle of discussion on any given suspect.

It is a good thing Chris. None of us have any kind of monopoly on correct interpretations but evidence is evidence. I don’t know if the ripper wrote the graffito. I favour that Stride wasn’t a ripper victim but she might well have been. I tend to doubt Tabram as a victim but I can’t state it as a fact.

I do agree though that one suspect does take up too great a percentage of the discussion (and I take my full share of the blame for that)

It often makes me realise how difficult it is at this point in time to find new topics or new angles for discussion.

I’m not going to go on about this point but when discussions/ debates are going on it’s annoying when one side just will not answer questions or respond directly to points. And it’s usually someone that’s quite happy to bombard you with questions that they expect answers to.

This thread should be merged with The Three Stooges Pie Fight one.

I must admit Herlock (and forgive me for saying this) but I sometimes get a feeling of despair wash over me when there's an active thread that's getting really interesting...and the topic naturally wanders into a discussion about the actions of the killer...and then Trevor rocks up with the organ theft theory...and then the next 200 posts becomes a direct battle between you and Trevor...and then the thread inevitably falls into the depths of oblivion... becoming a circular argument leading us all into infinity.. the meaning of the thread lost to the depths of time.

There's one thread that has over a 1000 posts, and 784 of them are just you and Trevor having an argument, and both of you using bold italics to reiterate your point over and over...

                        Just an observation

My last post on this point and I do realise the irony of it….really long posts.

Yup, I know…I’m responsible for a few record breakers and have done more long posts than most ( I wouldn’t even try to deny it) but first of all I do discount long posts on opening a thread. They involve description, background and the setting out of the relevant points so they can often be long. I’m talking about within threads which often means that individual points don’t get focused upon. We often get posts requiring 10 responses (unless we ignore them of course) and yes I’m guilty of doing it but I’m far from the only one. So that it becomes a case of…

                          Question
                          Answer
                          Question
                          Answer
                          Point
                          Response

                          Etc.

We should try if possible, me included, to focus on one point at a time before moving on to the next.
