  • all quite on the streets?

    Hi all,
Was browsing through the book " the blackest streets" recently at work.
The author ( her name escapes me now ) makes an intresting point on whether the streets were really as quiet and empty at the time of the murders as the Police at the time would like the pubic to think, but rather an attempt to make it appear the police were doing a good job at keeping crime down and had control of the streets.

The is Sarah Wise. Great book worth a read for any ripperologists. She mentions that

''One of the most interesting matters during the Autumn of Terror is the police insistence that the streets were quite at the time of each killing- that nothing was seen or heard by officers on their beats. The Whitechapel beats were small-smaller than those of most East London police divisions- and if the officers had, on the nights of the murders, been adhering to their routes and timings,as they all maintained they did, the killer would sometimes have had just a few minutes to accost his victim, kill perform mutilations and leave the scene''

We do have some confirmation from men like Lechmere, Paul and Hutchinson, who all spoke of totally or very nearly deserted streets at the hours concerned.
