  • The Seaside Home Revisited

The big question I have is did this really happen? And if so why did it happen in Brighton, and how?

From a Policing perspective the Whitechapel Murders would seemingly be Priority #1 between 1888 to 1891.
Yet clearly the Police never knew who this man was. They had ideas and suspects but that was all.

I disagree with the statement that no one saw this killer. I believe Long, Schwartz, Lawende and Levy likely saw him. Long was within a yard or 2 as she passed on the same side of the street and on the pavement, which was not that wide. Hutchinson is debatable but like Long, described a similar man. Shabby Genteel, rough, a foreigner. In Hutchinsons case the man had on his Sunday best, to venture in the rain? Or to specifically impress someone for a particular purpose?

Why would Elizabeth Long lie about seeing a foriegner, especially on Hanbury Street which was predominantly a Jewish Street. This according to Charles Booth. She had no reason.

The research that Charles Booth was conducting from 1887 to 1889 was hands on. The Demographics showed an uncanny correlation to the Jewish migration path from West to East that included the area around the London Hospital -with the murders. Berner Street, Batty Street, Fieldgate Street and approaching Bucks Row just South of the Jewish Cemetary, were all in the migration path. All South of the gentile population concentration. Does this say anything about
the killer, perhaps not wanting to stand out or appear suspicious?

Why Kosminski? Why would the Police care if a supposed imbecile were taken off the streets because he had violent tendencies? Why on earth would they need to create a ruse and take him to Brighton? Why not take him to a local station lineup?

This event might make more sense if the reason was perhaps politically motivated. For example, if it were discovered that the Home Secretary himself were somehow complicit in releasing the killer on Whitechapel. Say from a lunatic asylum the previous year. Would such a discovery have major consequences for the Monarchy?

What about the witnesses? Who would the most likely candidates be?
None of the PCs saw the Ripper according to inquest.
Long and Lawende coud not identify him.

He knew he had been identified ..means what and by whom.
Schwartz possibly. Why drag him to Hove to see an imbecile?
Hutchinson- possibly. The man looked at him stern, well dressed!
Levy- knew the killers exact height and was not cooperative.

Both Levy and Hutchinson have my own interest here. Hutchinson because he claims he saw him again on Middlesex Street and Levy because he may have seen his own cousin, but before Mary Kelly. After Kelly's he would have to act.

if there was no way to prove the killer was the killer without catching him in the act then what would you do? Watch him?
The Jewish Butcher? What is known about Kosminski being watched?

if the killer could point the finger and blame Henry Matthews for his release after being identified in Hove, would this explain the apparent stand off between the Authorities and the killer?

After Kelly the killings stopped. The truth was too hot to handle. Just watch and prevent.

I do not believe the Seaside Home event had anything to do with Kosminsky. Seems to me they would have locked him up and thrown away the key. I could see it being someone who had a major problem for the Home Secretary and the Policing establishment. One of their own so to speak.

Pure speculation but perhaps worth more exploration.

Regarding the seaside home doesnt this refer to a Police Convalescence Home/hospital. There was a home for injured/sick policemen in Hove, Sussex opened in 1890. Was the witness an injured police officer and the suspect taken there for an ID confrontation. Do we know if any of the police working on this case were injured at around the time or a bit after the murders??

Hi NW- the only Constable that might have seen the killer was William Smith as he passed down Berner Street just before Stride was murdered. He recognized her at the mortuary by face and described the man to some degree.

Smith described the man as wearing a deer stalker hat, cut away coat, and holding a parcel wrapped in newspaper about 6 inches wide and 18 inches long. He also thought he was around 28, 5 ft 7 and no whiskers. Not a bad description.

Based on Smiths beat timing, Stride had only 15 minutes or less to live.

Its not clear where Israel Schwartz falls into this timing but my guess is within minutes.

Was Smith at Hove in 1890 just 2 years after walking his beat and passing Stride on Berner Street?

I would think that if the witness were in fact a Scotland Yard PC that Anderson would have mentioned that as it gives more credence to his claim that they had actually captured the Ripper.
