  • Looking for source material. Police procedure & East End life post 1891.

Looking for advice on source material.

I have an opportunity to work on a project that is Ripper adjacent for an upcoming new edition of the "Cthulhu by Gaslight" supplement for the Roleplaying Game "Call of Cthulhu". It takes the horrors of Lovecrafts Cthulhu Mythos (mostly associated with America in the 1920s/30s and shifts them over to Victorian London.

I'm trying to get some good background details for 2 main areas.
Any sort of detailed information on how the Whitechapel/JTR murders were co-ordinated at the Police level, (who reported to who, were files shared between Divisions with a central station being the HQ on the floor so to speak?) and how people in the area were affected by it during and following the period that WE know was the end of Whitechapel murders in 1891.
Obviously they didn't know that it was over.
I was a week away from my 12th birthday when Sutcliffe was arrested, and the sense of relief around my home town in West Yorkshire was noticeable even to me. I want to try and get a feel for that time following not only the C5, but the whole business.
Sort of, how long did it take for the fear to subside? Had it already, and it was just viewed as "another shitty factor of living in the slums".

If anyone can recommend some good books, essays, etc, that cover this sort of stuff I would greatly appreciate it.

That's a very niche target, no particular source comes to mind that was devoted to the peripheral effect of the Whitechapel Murders. Though many books offer a few paragraphs, perhaps at best a chapter that may be helpful.

East End 1888, Fishman, 1988, offers a chapter on the local effects of the murders.
Jack the Ripper & the London Press, Curtis, 2001, gives some background from the point of view of the media.
Scotland Yard Investigates, Evans & Rumbelow, may be of help.
Capturing Jack the Ripper, Neil Bell, does give information on police tactics & procedures, if I recall.
Otherwise, I would search the press for what was going on and what people were thinking, and how they were affected during & after the murders.
It'll get you started at least...
    Regards, Jon S.
