  • Mrs. Richardson's Packing Cases

Kind of random, and even if it's what it looks like, it probably doesn't amount to much, but....

Mrs. Richardson at 29 Hanbury St, and her neighbor at No. 31, both built packing cases. They're situated right next to the Spitalfields Market. Dealers in the market presumably had need of packing cases, and probably formed a fair part of the business.

http://www.mernick.org.uk/thn/tokens...ket_tokens.htm talks about the use of tokens in connection with packing containers such as baskets and boxes at the markets.

To ensure (boxes) were returned a deposit was charged and tokens issued to the buyer for an equivalent value. When the containers were returned with the token the money was refunded.
Now why this is interesting to me is that his list of Spitalfields Market tokens includes a one shilling token from a Mrs Richardson! http://www.mernick.org.uk/thn/tokens...et_tokens.html No picture of it, sadly.

It makes me wonder if Mrs. Richardson was actually dealing in the market, in addition to making packing cases for sale (presumably the ones she sold would not come with a refund token).

I doubt it's the same Mrs Richardson.
