  • Charles Latham New Suspect?

    Hi

I was looking on www.oldbaileyonline.org, and found a Charles Latham aged 30. He was found guilty of killing a Mrs Mary Newman of 53 Drummond Crescent, St Pancras, on 19th May 1888. A witness Mrs Lee found the deceased lying on the bed and bleeding, and the prisoner with his right hand under her head, and left hand at her throat. He had something in his hand, but the palm of his hand hid the handle, but i'm certain it was a knife.

Another witness Mr Joseph Butcher said, I went in I saw the deceased was lying across the bed, the prisoner was kneeling with his right knee on her stomach, and his left foot on the floor, and he was digging away at her throat with his right hand, I could not see whether he had anything in his hand, it seemed to me as if he had made the wound, and he had got his fingers in trying to tear it open. I at once laid hold of him by the back of the neck I could not pull him off by myself, he was too heavy for me.

Mr Latham worked on a meat stall, and drank mainly on Saturdays.

Mr Latham was found Guilty of murder, but being insane at the time at the time he commited the act. Ordered to be detained during Her Majesty's pleasure.

The problem with Mr Latham as a suspect is, was he still unfit to be released.

    Thanks

'...on the evening of 19th May, about 7, I was in my room—as I was going from one room to the other I saw the girl Jane Newman crying in the passage—in consequence of what she said I went down to their room—the door was shut—on going in I saw the deceased lying on the bed bleeding, and the prisoner with his right hand under her head, and his left hand at her throat—he had something in his hand, but the palm of his hand hid the handle, but I am certain it was a knife—the deceased said "Mrs. Lee, he is killing me"—...'

An interesting quote for those who refuse to believe that someone can say they're being murdered while they're being murdered.

            It's all in the context.
Here the victim is making a direct appeal to a witness for help.
The victim isn't crying 'Murder' into the void while being murdered.

No difference, Lechmere. She doesn't scream "Help!" She reports the situation. She is self-conscious enough to do this, even in extremis.

But if you're being murdered, you're not going to refrain from crying out just because you don't know if you're actually going to be heard or not, surely? If you could cry out, you would, wouldn't you?
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.
