  • Listing of Lodginghouses

    Hello,
I am not sure if this question has been brought up. I am having great difficulty finding just a listing of the Names of the Common Lodginghouses. I can find a list of the Pub's. Specifically, I am looking for the Name and the corresponding address of the lodginghouses in the East End.
    I have found a few:
White House---56 Flower and Dean Street
    Cooney's---55 Flower and Dean Street
    Crossingham's---35 Dorset Street
    Satchell's---19 George Street, Spitalfield's
    Willmott's---18 Thrawl Street, Spitalfield's
Is there anyone that can point me in the direction of a list such as I have pointed out above? It is rather important to my research...

I don't know the names but if addresses are a help to you, in Spitalfields there were also lodging houses at 15 Great Pearl Street and at 6 Paternoster Row.

      Hi Sluggo

Don't know if it's any help but one of my ancestors most likely lodged at 50-53 Gun Street at the time of the 1881 census - so at a later date did Alice McKenzie...

      All the best

          Sluggo -

I don't know if there is such a list. I have a publication by the LCC in 1927 on common lodging houses - Many of those in Stepney were around in 1888. Here's the list, with the number of occupants. Note that these are registered common lodging houses.

Addresses only, I'm afraid - although some will be familiar - and perhaps there's a way in to further information simply by knowing those addresses. Note that 41 Commercial St - the first Victoria Home for Working Men - was no longer a registered lodging house at this date.

The Red House (Coffee Tavern) 115 - 119 Commercial Road: 21 men

House of Shelter (House of Shelter Trustees) Bagally Street, Burdett Road, Stepney (32 Men)

          19 and 19˝ Brick Lane (82 men)

27 and 29, Brick Lane and 58 Flower and Dean Street (79 women)

63˝ Brick Lane and 12, Princelet Street (203 men)

          313 Burdett Road (76 men)

          16, 20, 22 and 22a Crellin Street (ground floors) 28 men

          16, 17, 19, 20 and 20a Duval (Dorset) Street: 186 men

          28 - 30 Duval (Dorset) Street: 75 couples

35 Duval (Dorset) Street: 90 women

5 Flower and Dean Street: 103 men

56 and 57 Flower and Dean Street: 102 women

15 and 16 Great Pearl Street: 58 couples

          194 Hanbury Street: 249 women

          66 Leman Street: 74 men

82 Leman Street and 12 Tenter Street East (Poor Jew’s Shelter) 79 men and 14 women
