Jack The Ripper, Vlad the Impaler, Lizzie Bordon... these were all real people and they (presumably) did real terrible things to real people. But they are also cartoon characters of a sort. They are part of our culture, we celebrate notions of them as larger than life figures. Romantic, creepy, we make jokes, we write stories...
Nobody celebrates the reality of Jack the Ripper. They celebrate the cartoon of Jack the Ripper. And the cartoon never killed anybody.
