  • "Like"

    Hello all,

One thing I miss in all these discussions is the possibility to express approval for a post without necessarily commenting. I have found on several occasions that I would very much like to agree with something posted but have nothing in particular to add to the discussion. Something in the way of the "like" function on Facebook, for example.

    Any way of arranging this?

    Best wishes,
    C4

P.S. In my search for background information, I have been watching some very good documentaries covering the life of Edward the seventh, in particular "The real Edward VII" on You Tube. Throws some light on the character iof Prince Eddy, I believe.

      Hi Curious

We did once have a system where members could award stars to posts, to express approval. It was discontinued, for reasons which I cannot remember.

I suppose when you think about it, such a system doesn't really add anything to the boards. If someone simply agrees with a post, but doesn't add any new arguments, then nothing is really gained by adding stars instead. After all, a post might have a million stars yet still be wrong.

"I agree" is sufficient to my mind. Nice idea though.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

          Hello Robert,

I think perhaps you could use that argument for any post on the boards!

Was thinking more along the lines of "liking" a point well put. As in "I personally liked this", rather than "By Jove, I think he/she's got it!"

          Best wishes,
          C4

            I like this.

Seriously, I prefer someone who agrees with a post to comment on whether it's purely an emotional response, or they have been moved by some bit of logic. Also, because I lose track of everyone's biases, I don't know whether a comment about, for example, the diary being false, is being thumbs upped by someone who already agrees with that position, or who has just been moved toward it by the post.

              Hello Bridewell,

Yes, of course, but I do a good deal of my posts from my phone, and as belonging to the aged and infirm among us (not really, but a good excuse when caught doing something I shouldn't), it would save holding the phone at arms' length and squinting at the letters, not to speak of pressing the right ones and getting a reply such as "u sgtrr" at the end of it!

Far easier, if you only want to express your approval, to click onto "like", and, I would think an incentive to posters to express themselves succinctly and logically.

              All good wishes,
              C4

The idea has my support too.

                  .

As someone who doesn't comment much and prefers to read posts and be educated, I would like a "like" function.

Fair comment. I hadn't considered the difficulties posed by the small screen.

                      Hello again Bridewell,

Quick access would apply to the large screen as well.

If you are about to take the dog for a walk/go to the pub/change a nappy (or all three at once) this would save putting off your response until later.

                      All good wishes,
                      C4

I remember when we did that Robert and I was posting as perrymason....I had heaps of likes for comments I made and yet the actuality is that most of the senior members here disagree with my position on these murders ;D...so, youre right,...it really doesnt validate either the comment or the commentator,...its often more like glee expressed by some more inclined toward the gladiatorial spectator role....

                        Cheers

                          Hi Michael

I do seem to remember that Monty gave five stars to one of his own posts.

Yes, there may have been a kind of Star Wars thing going on between factions.

Oh dear, Michael, not what I had in mind at all. Perhaps I should change "like" to a "Well played Sir/Buddy!" (or whatever the current americanism is for "my dear chap") or suitable address for a lady, perhaps with a well-executed sketch of a cricket/baseball bat.

Seriously, though, if it would encourage people like Brenda eventually to post their views (go for it Brenda!) it would be no small thing.

                            Best wishes,
                            C4

Interestingly coincidental reference, since Ive lately been using the term Phantom Menace here instead of JtR ........but I believe the past few years have settled most of peoples "texted pie" throwing urges.

That being said, I think adversity can teach you how to make better arguments....and weve all seen some weak ones over the years.

All the best Robert, Happy Easter to you and everyone else.
