  • A Plausible Theory

I was doing some newspaper research yesterday and came across this letter sent in The Standard (this is the version printed in The Dundee Telegraph 5/10/1888).

I found the letter to be quite remarkable in just how close this writer is to my own theory, and this was days after the double-event.

Theorists were prominent with ideas even then. For me, this one is particularly close to the mark of my own thoughts.

Maybe some of the "modern" theories are not so modern after all.

Fascinating read. The author makes some very pertinent points.
    Best wishes,

Nice find. And some very well thought out ideas by the original author. Indeed, JtR was probably very non-descript and unlikely to stand out in a crowd. Living outside of the Whitechapel area is certainly not impossible, but if so, I still lean towards not far from the area. While I'm not convinced Cross/Lechmere had anything to do with the JtR crimes, he lived just outside the crime range area at a distance I could see worth considering, for example. The doss houses do seem too crowded to suit, but then, Richard Ramirez (sp?) lived in a hotel that would be the modern equivalent - rooms for let, occupied by people down and out, and notorious for criminal activity, etc. Still, given JtR took organs with him, I do think he lived alone, in his own place. Other situations, a wife, family, etc, create a lot of difficulties to overcome. But, I wouldn't rule anyone out on that basis alone.

Anyway, thanks for that. Good post.
