Hello all,

Here's an interesting little obituary that might nraise an eyebrow or two..

from the CMAJ (Canadain Medical Association Journal)

dated 1st January 1956 about one Dr Murrough O'Brien who died aged 88 years of age.

It is claimed of him that one of the first calls he had to make as a student was to a victim of Jack the Ripper.

Fascinating little snippet...He'd have been about 20 and I love the suggestion he subsequently failed his finals, (presumably), and had to achieve a lesser Commonwealth qualification...which suggests that if there's any truth at all in the account, he attended (either en-scene or at a post-mortem) as an unqualified assistant on secondment from his training...

I've no idea how realistic or otherwise this might've been at the time...

The book is called Saddlebag Surgeon, by Robert Tyre, and Chapter 4 explains the following..

Dr. Murrough O'Brien was a medical student, who stopped and apparently gave assistance to a woman who had just been murdered in Smithfield Market in November 1888.

It seems to be a mixed up muddle of time and invention. Also seems like a bit of "I was there and I was involved" rubbish.
