The "let's dress up in costume, even though we are adults in our late 20's" fad has finally reached my circle of friends, so for the first time since childhood I am trying to put together a Halloween costume. I'm not sure if they have this holiday in the UK or Australia, but it's the one on October 31 where we Americans dress up in costume, usually some kind of scary costume.
Anyway, I thought it might be educational for my friends for me to dress as "historically accurate Jack the Ripper". Now, Lynn Cates may suggest that the best way to do that particular costume is to simply not show up, but I personally still believe in a Ripper who killed Eddowes, and I find Lawende to be the most credible eyewitness, so I am going to base my costume on that sighting.
I have a cap, I have a sportcoat that's close enough to Salt and Pepper, and I hopefully will still have access to a 12-inch, non-serrated knife (I don't own one, but the girl I'm seeing does). I can surely acquire a red hankerchief, a fake mustache, and maybe even some chalk over the next month.
Questions I have for the forum:
(1) What kind of pants should I wear?
(2) What kind of shirt should I wear?
I have a reasonably large wardrobe, but I know nothing about Victorian dress. The ambiguity of the eyewitness description will hopefully give me a lot of freedom, but I don't want to make historical errors if I can avoid them without too much cost or annoyance.
