  • Similarities to rapist Hagamannen

Between 1998-2005 a serial rapist referred to as Hagamannen ravage the swedish city of Umeå.

That case have a lot of similarites to the jack the ripper case and it would perhaps be a good idea to see what we can learn from that. Hagamannen aka Nicklas Lindgren was arrested in 2006 after DNA-tests proved him to be the perpetrator. He was sentenced to 14 years after nine sexual assaults and to murder attempts.

In the case of Hagamannen we are talking about a male, mid 20's at first attack and 33-years old while arrested. His attacks gradually increased in violence and on two occasions the victim could have been killed if not due to luckily circumstances. He lives in Umeå and is a local man. He is working class, This is a labour-man that does manual work at a car repair shop. It's a physical demanding job and he is working with his hands to bend steel plates. He is described as a shy and withdrawn person and obedient at work. He is a well liked and loyal worker. He is around 1,70 meters long(well below average), he is strong and medium built.

Now this is interesting: he is not in the police records. No records of anything. Instead when he is caught earlier cases of sexual assaults will be revealed after victims come forward to point him out as the offender. But up until then he was never suspected nor had the police attributed that cases of assault with the attacks of Hagamannnen.

He is described as shy by his colleagues and a family man. He comes home with blood on his clothes but his wife never suspects him. In fact not one of his family, relatives or co-worker never suspects him of beeing the serial rapist. His co-workers apperently joke with him about his similarites with the phantom picture of Hagamannen but no one suspects him.

Hagamannen struck in early morning hours or late evenings after been out drinking heavily. This is happens on weekends basicvally or when he is off from work the next day. There are no explanation in his childhood or hatred against women previously noted that seem to explain his actions. Instead drinking seem to have triggered his behaviour and he seem to have left his friends to go out to roam the streets, basically attacking the first available victim. He strikes outdoors, in the citypart called Haga, thus his nickname Hagamannen(the man of Haga).

His modus operandi is directed at attempts to strangle the victim at first. Either by hand or putting his belt around the victims neck and using his physcial strength to subdue them. He also beats the victim in the process repeteadly in the face.
After that he is attempting to rape the victim which is sometimes succesful depending if the victim is available to alarm neighbours or not. Then he flees the scene.

After some rape attempts he makes some thing not related directly at rape. He steels belonging to victims. He does'nt live in Haga but he has his workplace there where he can come and go at night. He also have access to his brothers appartment on the nights of the rapes which is just near. His brother's appartment and his workplace is not more than 200-300 meters from most of the attacks.

Hagamannen becomes more violent as time progresses. In the year 2000 on a cold winter night, he strikes two time in one night. The first victim is attacked in the city center just at the border to Haga. But she screams and fights off the assailant and he flees in an easternly direction. He is spotted and followed by a taxi driver but manages to shake him off and makes it up to the university where there are lots of students on their way home from the bars that is closing. He finds a lone female, drags her into an alley, strangle her, almost beats her to death and rapes her.

After that he steals her shoes, and in an attempt to conceal his foot prints puts them on and walks towards his brother's appartment back at Haga. Back at Haga he is spotted by chance by a police in his regular car. The police decides to follow him as he is similar dressed to what witness have said of the assailant of the first assault that evenin g. Hagamannen notice that he is followed and manage to escape. After his capture he will acknowledge that the police was near to capture him that evening and that he was very frightened.

Due to risk of capture, Hagamannen will stay away from raping for five years until 2005. As things calm down he felt safe to attack again and strikes in the central of Umeå on his way home yet again after drinking with co-workers. He drags a woman down below a bridge, bits hear ear off, almost beats her to death, rapes her and almost succeed in dragging her into a river to drown her. He then flees the scene and is picked up by his wife to be driven home. His wife asks why his clothes are bloody and he tells her he had a nosebleed. Once again: no one even remotely suspects him even beeing close of doing the thing he has.

Now why do I chose to examplify by Hagamannen. Well I think there is a lot of similarties to point out here. Both steal from the victims and take trophys is one.

As with Hagamannen Jack the ripper struck in the early morning hours on off-days from work. As well as Hagamannen was out to drink so was probably also Jack the ripper. After they both felt more comfortable they proceeded to do what they wanted. Annie Chapmans late death in the early mornings is an indication of this, he is on his way home after the bars closed. There is otherwise no reason why the ripper would be out that early in the morning, there were lots of victims all around Whitechapel all night long for a determined killer.

Both took enormous risks. This is not calculated riks but stupid risks. As well Hagamannen as Jack the ripper is seen when they assault their victims. Israel Schwarz testimony is telling and an indication that Jack the ripper was intoxicated or otherwise not responding with normal sense to fear of beeing caught. Afterwards the ripper flees and goes where he knows more victims are to be found to fullfill his needs(prostitute church, aldgate) as well as Hagamannen on his double event crosses up to the university. Both are probably near to be caught that night and after they are successful heads home. Hagamannen towards Haga, Jack the ripper towards the center of Whitechapel. Hagamannen was almost caught by the police and Jack the ripper surely must have been questioned or near to be caught on his way home. For Hagamannen this resulted in a time lapse to next attack for over 5 years. Jack the ripper waited longer than before, over a month.

Hagamannen was phyiscally strong and worked a manual job. It's likely Jack the ripper did the same as he preferred strangulation as modus operandi. For Hagamannen the attacks are sexual, he strangles until he can rape. The same probably is true also for Jack. I think the throat cutting is something that evolved for him. Look at the case of Martha Tambram. Tabram was strangled but not cut in the throat. Perhaps she was not fully dead as he was about to cut which angered him and caused his frenzied stabbing. Or perhaps this just made him uncomfortable so when he strikes next he uses his usual mean(strangulation) but makes sure he first cut the throat before beginning to cut.

Interesting with Hagamannen is that no one suspected him by those who knew him. This could very well be the case of Jack the ripper too. Hagamannen was shy and obedient, the fbi profile states that Jack the ripper also showed that kind of character outwards. However Hagamannen was not known to be aggressive, manipulative or a liar at home or with friends. What then tells us that Jack the ripper also must have been all that as the FBI profile suggests. In fact drinking seem to have both these men more eager to commit attrocities.

Hagamannen stopped for five years. This was a decision based on fear of beeing caught. The same could possible also be said of Jack the ripper. After nearly beeing caught on the night of the double event, Jack the ripper choses to strike indoors next time to be more secure. This demands he dress up more to convince a victim to take him home which requires more planning. After the murder of Kelly, the ripper may as Hagamannen stop killing with police activity going thorugh the roof.

So what can we learn from the example of Hagamannen translated into the case of Jack the ripper. It fits well with the fbi-profile.

    1. Jack the ripper is probably out drinking on his murders. Murder of Kelly takes more planning.

    2. Jack the ripper is a local man. He lives within a few hundred meters from the murder scenes.

    3. He does manual labour and depends on his hands to do the work so he can start to cut after that.

    3. Jack the ripper stoped in fear of beeing caught. He may have started over years later.

    4. Jack the ripper was probably never suspected by his relatives and friends. He is shy and obedient. Withdrawn and not aggressive nor lying. Drinking is the trigger.

    5. Jack the ripper does'nt necessarily be on police records. He may have committed assaults earlier but never suspected or booked of offences committed.

    welcome

Hello Kuniworth. Welcome to the boards. Thanks for sharing this.

He does indeed approximate the FBI profile character. Sounds like quite a villain. Hope I never meet his kind.

    Cheers.

      Hi Kuniworth

As Lynn says, welcome to the boards.

Of course, a major difference in Jack's case would seem to be a distinct absense of rape... a different form of obsession (sexual still?) I guess...

      All the best

Absolutely. The interesting thing though is that in most aspects Hagamannen and the FBI-profile of Jack the ripper are stunningly similar.

Based on the profile of Hagamannen we should look for the following suspect of Jack the ripper:

        - Normal on outside and with friends and family. Drinking triggers darker side. Could be out drinking with co-workers.
        - Working class, manual labour with hands.
        - Below average in height. Loyal and appreciated worker.
        - Obedient, shy, polite, nice.
        - Either got home or workplace some hundred meters from the murder site.
        - Stop killing in fear of beeing caught.

Interesting example, one of the things that puzzle me about JTR was the way he just seemed to appear fully formed on the streets of Whitechapel.
The classic development of a serial killer can be seen in countless other examples where an anti social personality has exhibited behaviours sometimes from early childhood that can be seen as a 'becoming' phase, they may include arson, petty theft, assault, cruelty to animals and the gradual increase in violence culminating in serial murder.
I have queried suspects in the past, because other than circumstantial evidence they have not exhibited any of the classic 'becoming' behaviours, perhaps because such evidence cannot be found as records no longer exist,or perhaps because of 'Different times, different serial killer'
Thanks for the post, food for thought.
          All the best.

Off the top of my head, he reminds me more of Ted Bundy than he does Jack the Ripper.
