  • Daily News, 6 April 1888

    Hi all,
I've never seen the Daily News edition from 6 April 1888, except quoted by Sugden.
It was apparently the first newspaper to report the death of Emma Smith, which appeared on 7 April in most papers, together with the death of Annie Millwood (Milward) in the Eastern Post.

So I wonder whether Millwood's death was also reported in the Daily News 6 April.

the short report in the Daily News of 6 April 1888 of the attack on Emma Smith does not mention Millwood by name. However the headline does describe the attack as "Another Fatal Outrage in Whitechapel."

      Millwood

Hello David, Chris. Do either of you know if Millwood was ever considered by the police or public as part of the Smith through Coles reckoning?

      Cheers.

Right. There must have been "something in the air", ie : perhaps the man who wrote the article had heard about the Millwood case, which is far from unthinkable, since the same Dr Wheeler took care of both Wilson and Millwood, and since several articles on the Wilson case had been published the previous Saturday, on March 31. More importantly, the death of Millwood was to be reported only the day after (7 April).

Another possibility is that the journalist, if unaware of the Millwood case, decided that "Another outrage in Whitechapel" sounded better than "Another outrage in the East End".
