  • New BBC drama about JTR

A news story in today's Irish Times says that a new BBC drama about Jack the Ripper will soon begin filming in Dublin, starring Matthew Macfayden in the lead detective role (link below). As far as I'm aware, this is the first major film about the Whitechapel Murders since the one starring Michael Caine in the centenary year of 1988 - should be interesting at the very least.

    Hi Andrew,

Yes, this was discussed last year.

I was under the impression it was to do with how the murders effected the Police and locale rather than an insight into the investigation as such.

      Hi AndrewL

Whatever its faults, wouldn't you count 2001's From Hell starring Johnny Depp as Inspector Abberline as being "a major film about the Whitechapel Murders"?

      All the best

Hello Chris. Ah, major film! Silly me. With the fake East End accent, I thought perhaps it was an extended car insurance commercial.

        Cheers.

Sorry Chris, From Hell had completely slipped my mind. Here's another short article about Ripper Street from the RTE website - it says that the drama will be set in 1889 and concerns the aftermath of the case, although of course this could just be a misprint.

Ripper Street, a new eight-part BBC drama focusing on the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders in London in 1889, is to be made in Dublin this year.

no, it was too much total and utter rubbish to be considered a ``major film``, just like Sweeney Todd, It's nothing like the legend, Haining's book is fictional too, but it does depict a far more accurate Todd, than Tim Burton's theatrical/musical rubbish.

The best JTR is that modern Whitechapel version, they've done another one about the Kray twins recently, i saw it last week, all the rest of the old JTR films are very atmospheric, but too silly and innacurate.

you dont want a film, you want an accurate documentary over 4 series, a bit like that Crusaders series on BBC2....... but if you make a Hollywood blockbuster, it'll be a pile of junk

Very interesting- I wonder if it will feature the likes of the Alice Mckenzie and Frances Coles murders and paranoia over whether the Ripper has returned?

                  aftermath

Hello Andrew. Thanks for the update.

The 1889 aftermath? Hmm, then I suppose it will feature Sir MLM coming to the case 6 months late, reading Bond's report, and declaring that there were exactly 5 ladies killed.

A good lead in might be Dr. Bond doing a post mortem on MJK and then consulting his colour supplements for the others.

                  Cheers.

                    Hi Malcolm

I agree completely, and I expressed disappointment when From Hell came out that the Hughes Brothers had not made a more creditable motion picture instead of following the tired old Royal conspiracy line. Think what an interesting film they might have made if they had instead made a movie about Tumblety.

But, as we have said before, the Royal Conspiracy or Freemasons fantasy seems to be what the Hollywood producers like, and presumably what they think the film-watching public wants too. Much like TV producers think that the TV-watching public wants reality shows. God save us.

                    Best regards

                    Chris

                      Hi Chris,

It's not just what the film-watching public want. sadly it's what a lot of them actually believe. When I was researching last year a highly intelligent friend couldn't understand why I was bothering, because she'd heard about the Royal Conspiracy thing and accepted it as historically accurate.
I suppose that's what happens when someone publishes a book and calls it "The Final Solution", and when a credulous TV company takes it at face value and endorses it.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

                        suspects

Hello Bridewell. You are absolutely correct. I had a friend who read Cornwell and is now convinced that Sickert did it.

A student of mine heard a press release and gravitates towards Mann.

                        Ugh.

                        Cheers.
