Hello Maria. Yes, we are currently on the October 12 issue. Hope to finish by year's end.

I had a less expensive translator before Dr. Turtletaub--it did not work out.

Perhaps Chris can locate the other copies. Unfortunately, this must proceed slowly given the prohibitive costs.

"Was Elp working together with Jenkinson?"

Highly doubtful. Sir Ed was worried about Irish terrorism.

    Good luck with your research.

    Cheers.

Thank you so much, Lynn. I know about the previous translator, and a couple ideas for downsizing the costs are in my email.
      Best regards,
      Maria

I have an idea for keeping costs down, though it occurs to me that you are probably already doing so. Here goes: Scan the documents in Yiddish and set up Yiddish character keys representing the names you are looking for. If the searches for these names come out nil, move on to the next document. Upon finding the names such as Schwartz, then seek translation of only the relevant text or article.

As I said, it would seem to me you are already doing something along these lines to be using the Arbeter Fraint volumes that you are using.

          thanks Michael!

          Hi Michael,
cool to see you haven't left the boards.

Yep, Lynn and the translator, Dr. Turtletaub, are working with scans, and these documents are EXTREMELY slow. (That's why I don't have them on my own computer, which is already saturated with dozens and dozens of scanned music scores and has very little memory left out, keeps complaining about it.)

AMAZING idea, and I hope Lynn could set up this himself on his own comp or on some comp at his campus! At the worst, Dr. Turtletaub could do it herself, and she's very keen on keeping the costs down. She has even proposed something similar herself, though without the macro-key setting.
I was about to email Lynn back, I'll certainly sell him your macro-key setting idea! Thank you SO much Michael for helping out!

          And to Garza:
Have you noticed the new Wiki page Chris Phillips had set up here on casebook, Resources for Jewish genealogy? (Under Wiki-updates, http://wiki.casebook.org/index.php/Resources_for_Jewish_genealogy). Maybe you'd wanna incorporate this into your search?
          Just PMed you about this.
          Best regards,
          Maria

            tech

            Hello Maria.

"I hope Lynn could set up this himself on his own comp or on some comp at his campus! At the worst, Dr. Turtletaub could do it herself"

Well, sadly, I'm a trifle technologically challenged--so much so that the suggestion sounds a tad out of my league.

Moreover, Dr. T informs me that she cannot do the text blowups on the computer. My hunch is that this other would be outside her skill set as well.

But thanks to you and Michael both!

            Cheers.

              Lynn,

Here's some help with the idea of Yiddish keys: http://www.shoshke.net/uyip/blitspost.htm

I haven't done it myself, but I don't think it's so techie. I have an old computer that I could try it on first. Or I could use the computer at school since I quit last week and I have to finish this week and I'm out, and messing up a keyboard wouldn;t bother me in the least.

Hello Mike. Thanks. I'll consult my son on this.

                  macro-key settings for “Schwartz“

Lynn, what on earth are “text blowups“? Are you referring to zooming in?

Michael, if you'd be willing to attempt this, it would be totally AMAZING! It's not that techie, I almost did something similar (with macro-key setting) for the index of my book, but I had to give it up cuz Word is terribly slow and starts losing it on a 400 p. manuscript (with images and music examples), plus my index has too many names (thus I did the index manually). For the simple word “Schwartz“ it should be easily done. Unless the comp then conks out due to dealing with the Yiddish JPEGS – I assume they are? Or are they converted into pdf?
My iBook's too old (3 1/2 years) and saturated with data to be able to survive this, otherwise I'd attempt it myself.

                    Lynn,
Chris Phillips ordered a microfilm copy of 17 AF issues (from October 1888 on) for just $60 from the Center of Jewish History in N.Y.. According to the link to their catalogue, call number 1963-A-253-260 contains 8 rolls of microfilm from the years 1885-1923. Thus, ordering the 21-24 relevant issues from 1902-1905 would cost less than $100, and I'm willing to pay for this, if you wish. I assume there are indexes for every microfilm roll's contents. If there are no indexes, there's a guy in N.Y. who would go and look if I asked him to, though I'm not sure how he'd manage to navigate through the Yiddish! Incidentally I just happened to help this guy with something for his research last week, and he keeps asking when I'm coming to N.Y. and if he can do anything for me.
                    Best regards,
                    Maria

Basically the same. It saves Professor T much time when I send them.

Good news about Chris. Maybe I can lend a hand?

Do you think that these can be read through?

                      Cheers.

Lynn, since you're paying for the (super expensive) translations, I'd like to pay for the next microfilms (21-25 issues coinciding with the dates when Schwartz spoke from 1902-1905). I can order them to be shipped to your Austin address. Would that be OK?

I'm still waiting Chris to answer on this, but I expect that there's an index, since he was able to order specific issues from a specific period. I'm sure my friend in N.Y. will accept to help, but he's not Jewish and knows zilch about Yiddish.

By the way this is gonna turn up as a microfilm, so I have no idea how we could convert this into computer readable files that Michael or Lynn could word-search. If we order them as CD-ROMs, it'll become expensive – up to $600.
                        Best regards,
                        Maria

                          slow and steady

Hello Maria. I was wondering too.

Let's go slowly until we find a way of translating these. Right now I'm focused on doing an issue or two per year, and I am keen on those near the time of the Berner event.

                          Cheers.

sometimes the answer lies in the future

OK, Chris Phillips ordered microfilm PRINTS, not a microfilm duplicate. I can order microfilm prints to be shipped at your address, Lynn, and you can scan them and send them over to Dr. Turtletaub (or to Michael).

If numerals were used within the Yiddish parts of the paper, I hope that the dates will be legible and that a librarian at the Center of Jewish History would accept to go through this for my ordering specific issues.

                            Quote Lynn Cates:
Right now I'm focused on doing an issue or two per year, and I am keen on those near the time of the Berner event.

Completely understand, but I'm afraid that there won't be NO info whatsoever on the Stride murder in the subsequent issues of 1888 – et pour cause. (As the IWEC wouldn't have cared to advertize the incident. In fact, the Stride murder is not even mentioned in the subsequent AF issue.)
However, the key to Schwartz' identity (and to the real meaning of his testimony) may very well lie in the AFs from 1902-1905.
                            Best regards,
                            Maria

                              idea

Hello Maria. If Michael is game, you might send them his way.

Hopefully, when the 1888 copies are done, I may be able to devote some time to the others. Of course, at my age . . . .

                              Cheers.
