Oh shoot, I just realized that I meant to say the 7/7/05 bombings, not 2007, meaning that the cop actually said "a few years ago," not "last year." My mistake. Too many sevens.

Aldgate tube station just sits under the surface, not as deep as other stations.

As far as I'm aware there was no surface damage.

Thanks Monty. Seems odd what the cop said then, as there would be nothing ambiguous about that. Either there was a hole or there wasn't, and if there was you'd think we would have seen pictures of it. I'll write it off as just a peculiar conversation I had in Mitre Square.

I was in Mitre Square just a little before that (about '05) and had just come from taking photos in Henriques Street. What troubled me was that there was a school in both locations and I thought that the police might view me as some sort of dirty old man because I was hanging around schoolyards. (I'll plead to the "old man" part, but I'm not actually "dirty": I'm more like Wilfrid Brambell in A Hard Day's Night: I'm a clean old man.) Anyway, there wasn't an officer in sight at either location, so the issue didn't arise.

(Note to self: Schools, either now or then, figure in at least three of the murder sites. A teacher may be a prime suspect. Druitt, for example could....nah, forget it.)

The general rule of thumb is no photo taking during school hours, if you happen to be around at that time the its a case of returning later.
