    Porter was the staple drink of the London working class in Victorian times. It was a mixture of old stale ale and new fresh beer, which gave porter its sour lactic flavor.
    The Licensing Act of 1872 permitted local authorities to exempt public houses from observing normal hours of opening where there was nearby commercial activity such as markets or docklands. Some pubs could be open virtually all day and night.
