I think it was grimmer in the 1800's. No welfare state, no minimum wage, no antibiotics,transportation for those who dared to steal a potato or scrap of bread from the rich, no insecticides to deal with lice, ticks, bedbugs etc, cholera outbreaks, whooping cough,mumps etc, inadequate sewage disposal, unsafe water to drink.
