    Those pictures made me cry....unfortunately, 10 minutes or less from me, in the US, it is exactly the same:

      Hi Caps,
      There's anothjer thread running on this too, as I said there these pics have been around for ages, Jane Coram's also done a painting of the one of the girl with the cat.

        I think it was grimmer in the 1800's. No welfare state, no minimum wage, no antibiotics,transportation for those who dared to steal a potato or scrap of bread from the rich, no insecticides to deal with lice, ticks, bedbugs etc, cholera outbreaks, whooping cough,mumps etc, inadequate sewage disposal, unsafe water to drink. Being poor in today's America might have seemed like a vacation to them .
