I've decided to repeat something that I asked when I first joined Casebook, back before the big crash. In fact I sought out this site just so I could ask this question, but back then no one was able to give me a definite answer. I am looking for a quote that I remember very clearly reading in some book on Jack the Ripper, something so specific and striking that it stuck firmly in my mind, but now as I dig through my collection of JTR books I can't for the life of me find it again. It was some kind of editorial comment in a newspaper or some other published source, someone commenting BEFORE the murders had begun on how the horrible conditions in the East End were bound to lead to tragedy. The quote was somthing very close to this:
"Whitechapel is a hell, and mark my words, it will produce a devil."
Does anyone know whose quote that is and where it appeared? It's been driving me nuts for a long time.
