  • Ripper Books

I know there are several books pertaining to the subject. I found some for free through http://www.freebookspot.co/Default.aspx. I found Jack the Ripper and the London Press, Jack the Ripper An Encyclopedia, What Alice Knew A Most Curious Tale of Henry James & Jack The Ripper, and Patrica Cornwell's novel on audio book. I've kinda glanced through some of these, but was curious which of these provide the most factual evidence. What other JTR books should I acquire? I was mostly interested in books that might provide extra information that may not be found in any of the books I mentioned. I'm slightly interested in reading the books pertaining to the royalty theories, I don't particularly subscribe to any of these, however I was curious if there was any information in the books that provide more facts for the case as a whole, rather then just the theory that got the book wrote in the first place.

Try clicking on "ripper media" to the left of the screen,or reading some threads down in the "books" part of the forum. On audio book? Search for martin Fido on audiable or itunes for On the Trail of Jack the Ripper. Also try the "pocket essentials" JTR book.

On paper? JTR The Facts (sometimes the "uncensored facts" in a different edition) by Paul Begg is one of the best starting points. Though, again, there is a lot of choise and casebookdoes a fine job of reviewing new releases, as does the examiner.

      Wow

First of all let me say I feel like a bit of a tard for not having searched a little more thoroughly. I had no idea there were that many books. I knew there were quite a few, but I never imagined there would be that many.

I seem to have a lot of reading ahead of me. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

On a side note I noticed there seemed to be quite a few of the books authors who post in these forums. Is that simply authors who decided to join the forum to defend their books? or is it a case where they had started out posting in the forums and then afterwords decided to write a book?

Mostly just curiosity, however I've been kinda toying with idea of a book and was wanting to get as much information as possible. This site is a great place for that. My only problem is I've never written non-fiction before.

Patutte, I think as you get into the site here you'll find that the major focus isn't on defending one's own theory but coming closer to what truths we, as a group, can. So my opinion for what it is worth, is that the authors that are on Casebook such as Martin Fido or Stewart Evans are here not so much to defend their work as they are to further their knowledge. I'm currently writing a novel about Jack the Ripper and the people on the site have been most helpful. Start with Paul Begg's Jack the Ripper: the facts and The Ultimate Jack the Ripper Companion by Stewart P. Evans and Keith Skinner. If I can be of help further, please don't hesitate to avail yourself of my service.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. The people on this site seem extremely helpful. So far at the moment I only see a couple of possible problems. Like I've mentioned before I've never written Non-fiction. Not sure if that will really be a problem in the end, however I do kinda wonder if that might make it a little difficult stopping the book from going off the tracks. My second problem, which is a current issue, finding info on who could potentially be my main character, Rober Mann. I know he isn't exactly on many people's short lists, if any at all, (or even long lists for that matter) but I can't shake this feeling. I just have this gut feeling that he was somehow involved. Possibly even JTR himself (it's ok, you can call me crazy, I kinda want to do the same, LOL). I'll keep digging though. Bound to turn up something eventually. I don't know if he will turn out to be JTR, however there is one thing I do know for certain, he was somehow involved.

Two things are key to non-fiction first tell a compelling story. Two- research as a historian if you keep those two things in mind, you'll do well. Keep an open mind because while you may well be right about Mr. Mann evidence has the damnedest habit of creeping in and bollocksing a perfectly good theory. When I started working on my novel i was firmly of the belief that Francis Tumblety was Jack but I have subsequentlydiscarded the good Dr and currently believe he was a faceless entity in other words, someone who lived in Whitechapel who had rudimentary anatomical knowledge who no one suspected at the time. Criminal master minds are great for fiction but rarely do such maevins of evil exist for real. Good luck and good hunting!
