  • Missing/Returned evidence

Does anyone know what evidence pertaining to the JtR case that was once thought to be lost or stolen that has been returned to the police, museums or scholars of the case?

I would be interested to know the best way for someone to return evidence to the case that had been in private hands.......beyond the usual way of saying a dead bloke gave it to me in a pub. I'm assuming the person holding onto this evidence wants to make some cash out of the "find" but not end up in court.

I'm only asking out of curiosity......not because I myself (or anyone I know) has any missing evidence.

    Hi Dave,

The Dear Boss letter and Dr. Bond's report on Mary Kelly were missing for 50 years and returned anonymously to Scotland Yard in 1987. Of course, the victims photos weren't available for many years, but were recovered over time. The From Hell letter went missing in the 1950s and is still missing. I'm sure there are many other examples, but those are what come off the top of my head.

    Yours truly,

    Tom Wescott

Oh my God, not another one of those threads, I'm willing to bet that someone's gonna get banned from the boards at some point or another.
Perhaps the best way to help someone (unknown and totally hypothetical) to return a retrieved document is to email SPE, or Monty, or Rob Clack.
Director Dave, you don't by any chance have access to the “From Hell“ letter, or to Abberline's reports – or to Hutch's authentic signature?
      Best regards,
      Maria

DirectorDave posts to the boards all the time, Maria. I guess you missed the following from his post.

I saw that Tom, but I was hoping it was just a disclaimer. (And that Detective Dave had come upon an acquaintance who might have sources handy.) I know, hope dies hard.
I seem to recall Director Dave from some very sound comments in the Palin thread (which is pretty unusual in itself), and from his endearing thread about how to get warm in the winter up there in Scotland with not central heating. (On which I'd have a few tips myself: wear all the clothes you own, drink whiskey or red wine, eat soup or oats or chocolate, work out, be a surfer/snowboarder, so that you get gradually used to the bitting cold, sleep inside of your boardbag wearing all the clothes that you own {the infamous layer-look}, etc. etc.).
Sorry for highjacking this thread at the end.
          Best regards,
          Maria

            Cheers Tom.

maria.....The reason I asked was that I had a chance to expand some work I am doing at the moment (Media Related) into the field of Ripperology. However the chance has now passed for the present.

I have never even met anyone in the flesh who has even a passing interest in Jack the Ripper.....never mind a serious academic one. These boards are the only link I have to the Ripperologist community.

However on a positive note.......the snow has mostly gone.

            Cheers.
