    Apologies for missing your post.

    They were used in extreme circumstancies as a weapon. Quite simply they struck people with it.

    As for signalling, no morse wasnt used. It was held in the hand and moved slowly left and right. This would be how Neill called Thain. Again, it was simple and grabbed the othe bobbies attention who, if he saw the signal, would have responded likewise before going to assistance.
