  • Who I am liking as a jtr suspect

Jacob Levy. as most of you already probably know, he was apparently a jewish butcher who got syphilis I believe from prostitutes. I did a search and there isn't all that much info about him. Anyone else like this suspect at all?

    Jon,

FYI, there are a few threads devoted to Jacob Levy in the General Suspects Discussion under Suspects, e.g., http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=2976

Based on what we know, Levy is a better suspect than many. However, i feel JTR would have some history of eccentric and anti social behaviour, or suspicions of such, that predate the murders, which possess a deviant sexual element. Nothing i have read about Levy, which, granted, is not much, suggests that this is the case.

Definitely a very, very under-rated suspect and should, all things considered, be in the top half a dozen or so based on what we know of him at the present time. Worth your while checking those threads out that the other members have already suggested, Jon.

          Cheers,
          Adam.

If you're interested in Levy you might want to get hold of a copy of 'The Crimes of Jack the Ripper' by Paul Roland if you haven't already got it. It was Roland who first suggested Levy as a suspect.

Roland was most certainly not the first person to suggest Levy as a suspect, in spite of his claims to the contrary.

Here's a link to Levy's 1886 trial on the Old Bailey website

                  Exactly.

Mark King wrote about Levy as a suspect for Ripperologist magazine about a decade prior to Roland's book appearing. It was the first modern reference I heard that pointed the finger at Jacob Levy.

                  Cheers,

                  Robert

Thank you for that, Robert. I had trouble remembering who it was who first gave us Jacob Levy. You now have me nostalgic for old school Ripperana.

                      Hi all

From the info I have gathered, Mark King seems to know more about Jacob Levy and his family than anyone else does.

It was Mark King who found out about the mental instability in the family and Jacob's brother Abraham committing suicide. All this when the internet was in it's infancy!!! Wonder if he has any copies laying about

I look for any updates on the Jacob the Ripper thread every day, as he is my number one suspect.

I would love to see the Mystery Files: Jack the Ripper documentary where Jacob Levy is the primary suspect. Has anyone seen it and is it worth seeing or with too many errors?

I, too, think Jacob Levy is overlooked far too often. I must admit though, I go back and forth between Levy and an unknown male. As far as named suspects go though, Levy is my favorite.

Also, Stephen Thomas thanks for that link, I had read part of that court transcript, but I had never seen it in it's entirety.

Kaspar, I've never seen a documentary with Jacob Levy as the main suspect, but I've only been studying the case for a little more than a year so I could be wrong. I do know there's a game "Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper", and Jacob Levy is a suspect in that. You may look into it if you're the gamer sort.

                            You're welcome, Erryn

He obviously had a criminal mind and what might a prison sentence of 12 months hard labour have done to it?

                              Hi Stephen

He never actually did the 12 months hard labour, he was sent to an asylum instead.
