  • Towards a Centralised General JTR Published Papers Directory

One of the sad things happening on this marvellous Internet Experiment called "Casebook: Jack the Ripper", is that it is burgeoning: becoming too big.

As the result, people are exploding at others watering down the evidence in favour of their favourite JTR suspect, getting all huffy, and taking their theories elsewhere. Some have moved for other, valid reasons.

Now they can go to Casebook Examiner; Ripper Notes: Ripperologist or JTRForums....

Perhaps we should all do what the legendary, swashbuckling Ripperologist A.P.Wolfe does, and ensure at least one copy of their marvellous research is posted onto a freely accessible site, where all can enjoy the gems of hard-won research .

I am thinking here that I do not subscribe to Ripper Notes, and thus have not read Andrew Spallek's good research on Dr Druitt.

Perhaps there needs to be some kind of Central Directory or Index (or is that called a Search Engine?) where we can all locate relevant articles by other
    Ripper researchers?

I have not considered the cost incurred by these researchers in acquiring their information. Some would say surely they are entitled to recoup their expenses by selling their articles? I agree. But how about putting the details on a Central List somewhere?

Or releasing the original for open access after some years have passed?

    JOHN RUFFELS.

The above observations by me, appeared on a Lionel Druitt thread.
Adam Went and Chris Phillips have already commented upon my suggestion, and I would invite them to repost their comments here.

After reading the once-again, inflammable postings on " Casebook Examiner 2" thread, where a prominent poster said they would withdraw after sundry excited remarks...I can see Casebook losing another active JTR researcher.

I should add that the quote at the head of this entry here, was composed without thought for the pros and cons of the arguments presented on the other thread. Or of the behaviour of those posters specifically in that case.

A Developing Idea: How can we Ripper researchers and followers best create a Central Directory of ALL Ripper researched articles published on one of the above-mentioned outlets?

    Or elsewhere for that matter?

Do readers think this is a feasible suggestion?

    JOHN RUFFELS.

Rather than reposting my previous response, maybe I can post a different one.

It is certainly difficult enough to keep track of everything that's posted on Casebook, let alone things that appear in jtrforums.com, in the periodicals and elsewhere.

One idea which had crossed my mind - a bit different from John's but related to it - and which I had discussed with Jennifer Shelden as a possible feature for the Examiner is a sort of unified listing of new Ripper discoveries, great and small. In order to minimise the work involved, I had in mind just a sentence for each new discovery, together with a hyperlink (or a reference to an article in a periodical). Obviously detailed discussion and argument would take place elsewhere.

Actually, I think this would work just as well - or perhaps even better - as an online discussion thread. To be useful, it would take only a few people willing to post a sentence and a link whenever they saw anything new and interesting about the case. If enough people participated, people could be reasonably sure that provided they had just scanned that thread, they wouldn't have missed anything new of significance.

I like Chris's suggestions a lot, and really can't add much more to my comments in the other thread than that. I for one would be happy to share any past researches that I've done, and hopefully some other members would be on board with that as well.

      Cheers,
      Adam.

I've started a new thread to try out the "new discoveries" idea. I'm not sure whether it really addresses John's suggestion, but at any rate it may be useful if a few people are willing to contribute to it:
General discussion about anything Ripper related that does not fall into a specific sub-category. On topic-Ripper related posts only.

I've long advocated not only a cyber-repository for information, but a physical one also. where people could desposit (or bequeath) copies of their primary resources and make them available to all.

I do not want to rush anyone, but as the technology improves, more and more will be available in a digital form. I would like to see some system in play in case the trend of sharing should catch on. It would be nice to have an in situ mechanism for it. Dave

              Hi All,

I intend to have all of my better essays posted to Casebook at some point. Some are not all that great or important, so I probably won't post those, but I'll probably update my Berner Street Mystery essays at some point and put them here, and certainly my Stride article from Examiner #1 will be up here at Spry's leisure. Not my Le Grand one though. That was intended only for serious students of the case. Or those serious enough to plunk a few bucks down.

              Yours truly,

              Tom Wescott

I have a research suggestion for this project. How about the registry of common lodging houses for say 1885-1890 in our area. Having these could be a real boon for the community. Dave

Magic Sparks From An Acceptable Idea..

I am really pleased at the responses posted here. Thanks.

As usual, clever minds hone a thought; or proffer a sub-set stream of relevance.

                  Each is equally valid.

Now all it needs is for good-minded people to go off to the other JTR sites and offer the central idea up for discussion.

So: An index of new discoveries; lodging houses; a physical repository for the vast and valuable collections of dead Ripperologists; a central repository Online, for Ripper researchers better-distilled results...

                  All good stuff.

And, yes, most of this could become academic if wide sharing through digitisation catches on.

                  Hmmmmmm..
