    Traveller - a traveling salesman employed by a company to sell their goods, also known as a "commercial traveller".

    Hawker - someone who sells his whares in the street, like a hot dog stand for instance.

                          Shop fitters fit out shop interiors. Counters,shelves accessories etc, They are still called that today. Miss Marple

                            Thank You Miss Marple.I know some of these questions seem dumb, but what I think something might be is determined by what else is in the PD. There are other listings that refer to design and decoration of interior spaces, so naturally, I was flabbergasted by what differentiates a "shop fitter". Now I know. Dave

                              Hi Protohistorian,
                              My favourite nomenclature is 'Pure Finder' The poorest of the poor collected dog poo in the street to be used in the leather tanning industry, it was known as 'pure'. The finest leathers would be cured with this substance. The was a tanning yard down in Bermondsey.
                              The Victorians were great recyclers, they wasted nothing. They would be appalled at our throw away society.
