  • mitre square murderspot

It is generelly excepted that the spot on where Eddowes body was found is roughly in front of the now standing flower bed, where it slighty curves.
Is this correct, because the distance between this spot and Mitre street seems to be very short and it is hard to imagine a building standing in that space ( where the flowerbed now stands )
Drawings of the scene at the time all seem to show the entrance from Mitre Street into the square as having more depth than exists today.
Or has Mitre Street moved slightly due to war damage of the blitz?

    anyone enlighten me ?

    Spyglass,

The precise murder spot is not actually infront of the flower beds. Thats pointed out because, I suspect, its easier to spot.

The actual location is just slightly towards Church Passage, where the paving kirbing meets the setts.

The current paving differs from 1888, this can be seen in Whitby-Greens photo, as it is smaller than 1888.

So basically, yes you are correct. The dimensions have been reduced meaning the cottages were slightly wider.

I prepared this graphic for inclusion in my book "Past Traces". It shows the approximate location of the original layout of "Ripper's Corner" in Mitre Square.

I don't know if it's just my imagination, but if you look carefully, you can actually see a disturbance in the setts that follows the line of the old kerb. Almost as if the ground beneath the setts that formed the original "footprint" of the square has settled down to a greater extent than where the pavement was.

Probably just my mind playing tricks on me!

            All the best

Many thanks Andrew, this image shows the position perfectly.

Yes, there are many signs of the old layout.
