  • Jack the Ripper in America

I just saw this Documentary that has an, i believe, retired detective investigating and following the movements of James Kelly and focuses on him as the ripper. I wanted to know if any ripperologists have seen this documentary and I'm wondering what is thought of it as far as credibility?

Hello, Clark, and welcome to the boards. Unfortunately, I missed this documentary but am keeping my eyes peeled for a repeat. Judging by what reactions to the show I could find on this site (I was annoyed at having missed it and wondered what others had thought), the consensus was that it wasn't much good. But then I suppose that any theory with a named suspect will attract more detractors than supporters.

Sorry I can't offer an opinion based on having seen the programme but I thought as a first time poster, you deserved a welcome. What did you think of the programme anyway?

    Best wishes,

    Steve.

Damn, you beat me to it Clark. Welcome to the boards, by the way.

Anyway, personally I thought the Man, I forget his name, who was investigating had some good theories, but still not enough to convince me that Kelly was the Ripper.
      Scarlett (2010) (Completed)

Witness a modernized retelling of London's most gruesome mutilation, the murder of Mary Jane Kelly at the hands of the notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Well the investigator, i forget his name as well, did indeed have some good theories, i really do, my thought was that this guy was really giving it his best shot with what he had. I got the impression that this has been haunting him a little and this show was the result. One thing that bugged me was that one of the pictures that they used for James Kelly looks a lot like the one that Casebook here uses for Hyam Hyams. Anyways, other than that i had no issues with it. It's Quite convincing in some ways.

          Clark,

That show made mistakes on dates and talked off-handedly about a murder just after Kelly was supposed to have arrived, but gave no indication on who it was that was murdered. No one that I know of, has ever found that unidentified female that he talked about. There was nothing new in that show, and too much melodrama.

The show was definitely worthwhile and interesting. the book about Kelly, "Prisoner 1167" goes into a lot more detail. Kelly, at least at the time that he killed his wife, was definitely a guy who could've fit the Ripper's personality. I definitely will not go so far as to say that I'm convinced that he WAS the Ripper. Would've been nice if the person who interviewed him when he was back at the asylum would've dug a little deeper.
