  • A "Jack The Ripper" charity

Hi everyone. I recently had a thought. In a recent documentary on the Ripper, Stephen Ryder said that there as many a 12 books a year that are published about the Ripper, not to mention the numerous films and documentaries made about the case. THat being said, I wonder, has anyone ever thought of creating a charity in the names of the victims of Jack the Ripper. What would happen is all of the proceeds created from sales of Ripper books and maybe some given by television networks or studios that show films/documentaries would go towards families of murder victims whose killers have not been brought to justice. Just a thought I had.

The difficult part would be creating a name for it. I know something like "The Mary Kelly foundation" or "The Annie Chapman Charity" sounds appealing, but it leaves out the other known victims.

My personal name would be: "The Canonical Five Foundation."

    Any thoughts?
I won't make any deals. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed,de-briefed, or numbered!

    Hello JTRSickert

Sounds like an excellent project for you, JTRSickert. Personally, given that Mary Jane Kelly is the most famous victim in the case I would suggest that "The Mary Kelly Foundation" or "The Mary Jane Kelly Foundation" might be the most appropriate name.

Thanks for making this interesting and valuable suggestion, JTRSickert.

    Best regards

      Thanks Chris,

Would you, by any chance, know of anyone who I might be able to pass the idea on to? Maybe a bunch of the current Ripperologists(like Begg, Fido, Evans, and Skinner) should be contacted about it and maybe give it some thought.

Of course, I know nothing about setting up charities and so forth. So, does anyone know here about how I could set something like that up?

Hi JTR, you might like to browse this which will give you all the advice you need to start. I set up a non profit in 2007 to support victims of antisocial behaviour and found this invaluable.

To start a charity you need trustees, to choose a business structure, decide suitable charitable purposes and you may have to register with the Charity Commission

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Alan Moore might have made some donations to charities with the profits from his graphic novel "From Hell."

In the last volume "The Gull Catchers," he writes about the fact that all Ripper fiction is founded on real bloodshed. I would hope his case is not singular. I don't think it can be ignored that there comes a certain moral responsibility when you are profiting from historical murders like these.

As far as creating an organization, I think it is a great idea. However, that would require an administrator who is trustworthy and diligent.

I would just like to point out that the new Casebook Examiner has pledged to donate its net proceeds annually to charity. As far as i know, this is a first in the field and just another example of how the magazine is new and different.

            Don Souden.
            Editor Casebook Examiner.
"To expose [the Senator] is rather like performing acts of charity among the deserving poor; it needs to be done and it makes one feel good, but it does nothing to end the problem."

Thank you, Don for pointing the Examiner out to me. It looks great!

I just looked at the page here on Casebook about the Examiner. Have you posted a thread o the forum with any previews from the magazine yet?

                Hey all,

That's a very good idea, JT. Especially given that Ripperologists haven't always been branded in the nicest way by those outside the case, so it would be good to give something back to show where we really are at......well done to Don and the gang for being the first to try this. I shall have to subscribe ASAP.

As for the name, rather than picking and choosing over the victims....what about simply calling it "The Whitechapel Foundation" ??

                Cheers,
                Adam.

I do think that books and films about murder cases should have some sort of rule that a very small percentage of the profits go to either the victim's family or to a victim support charity. At least then some good can come of the public's interest in the crimes.

                      HI Jt,

I think that is a wounderful and worthwhile idea. Maybe you can creat a charity to help murder victims families pay for funeral expenses? Just one more idea to add to the flock.
                      Washington Irving:

"To a homeless man, who has no spot on this wide world which he can truly call his own, there is a momentary feeling of something like independence and territorial consequence, when, after a weary day's travel, he kicks off his boots, thrusts his feet into slippers, and stretches himself before an inn fire. Let the world without go as it may; let kingdoms rise and fall, so long as he has the wherewithal to pay his bills, he is, for the time being, the very monarch of all he surveys. The arm chair in his throne; the poker his sceptre, and the little parlour of some twelve feet square, his undisputed empire. "

                          Hello JTR,

                          Yes, an extremely good idea.
Just to add an idea or two, murder victim's families, childrens education.
                          Just a few thoughts.

                          best wishes

                            Hello JTR,

I believe, but could be wrong, that there is a charity working specifically in Whitechapel helping with many problems within the area. Food for thought perhaps?

                            best wishes

                              Phil,

Thanks for the info. I'm currently pondering my options concerning this charity idea. it is difficult since I have to balance bth work and school ,but this idea has appealed to me and I will continue to pursue all available ideas. The charity would have 2 beneficial outcomes.

                              1. It would provide relief and suport to families who have lost loved ones due to crime and never had justice brought to them

                              2. It would encourage people to purchase various types of media about the Ripper case, thereby spreading the info. about the case to more people and get lots more involved.
