Nice one, Maurice! "Selling the sizzle." Keeping with the "Steakhouse" analogy. I love it.

Fair enough. I am selling the sizzle, as you put it. But most people aren't interested in the grueling work that goes into creating something. They just want to enjoy it, so I tend not to go into the detail of all that sweaty business.

I've been a recording artist for the last 16 years, and in my experience, everyone wants to hear debauched tales of being in a Rock 'n' Roll band, but no one wants to hear about the business end- the reality of it.

They don't want to hear about how I spend 95% of my time as a "musician" managing the band, booking shows, promoting, recording, rehearsing, designing packaging and fliers, going to Kinko's, dealing with the label, dealing with publishers, dealing with lawyers, creating press releases, setting-up a publishing company, copyrighting my work, dealing with the venues, etc.

They want to hear how to get chicks, how wasted I got, and about shows I played the cops raided. To most people it is about the fantasy, not the reality. That's why few musicians ever get anywhere with music. There is real work to be done and lot of it no matter how big or small you are.

So, now that you know why I am selling the sizzle...what would you like to know?

Doesn't look like a waste to me. You are following your passion, and I commend you for it.

How much do I have to donate for you to use me as the model for Mary Kelly?

        Actually it's very well done.

          Heya, Belinda!

LOL. Actually, the tale begins after her murder. But I appreciate you taking a look and the compliment on our work thus far. Thank you!

Thank you, Cynthia! I'm glad to see you are so excited about the book.

I did look at Kickstarter's FAQ section about this issue and found this:
              "Question: I'm a non-US Amazon account holder and I can't make a pledge, what's up with that?

Answer: If you are a non-US Amazon Mechanical Turk user you may experience a problem trying to pledge. You'll need to create a new Amazon Payments account during check-out. Sorry this is annoying. We've alerted Amazon about this bug. "

It looks like if you work around this, you can pledge from anywhere. Hopefully Amazon will fix this issue soon.

Again, thank you for the post and the interest. Hope you can join in!

                  Hi Wolfgang,
                  Welcome to Casebook..

My initial reaction was ...that's different!.Not sure about using the Skerlock name...bit close to Sherlock for me.

But I wish you well with it...always interested to see new ideas on the subject.

Note here to everyone...wasn't there something else called 1888...another book or film?

I can't believe anyone would even consider donating, let alone doing it. I totally agree with what Ally has posted.

Two people have actually donated $500!! I am gobsmacked.....
                      Best regards,
                      Adam

Yeah I agree with Anna too. I took one look at the cover which contained the of-course image of the snarling monster man, the oh so familiar sounding Skurlock and the word Casebook and went:

                        *cough cough* Rip-off *cough cough*

Oh look I am doing a dark Sherlock! I'll call him Skurlock. Very imaginative.

                        First impressions are important.

                        Let all Oz be agreed;
I need a better class of flying monkeys.

Thank you for the welcome, and for having a look.

The name similarity is part of my revision of the classic "Gaslight Romance" genre, into which most Ripper stories fall. I chose the Irish surname Skurlock for the main character because it seems to cross Sherlock (a famous Victorian character's name) with Skull.

In doing this, you immediately know in which era the character lives. This is mixed with the skull- symbolic in Western culture of death, medicine, spiritualism, life, scientific exploration, and the occult. As a whole, the name suits the character perfectly.

And here's mine of you: at least you hold your sense of humor and wit (I'd insert a snarky comment about the half or lack thereof, but I haven't had my coffee yet and I am tired) when your toes are held to the fire.

That's more than most people manage on here. Which is deserving of props in and of itself.

Thank you, Ally. Entering a forum developed for the purpose of examination and debate of seemingly unsolvable crimes, and asking every member to love my idea for a book would be foolish.

I am merely here to inform people that the project is happening, what it's about, and to answer pertinent questions they might have. I am enthusiastic about 1888, but I would hazard to say any member who has poured their romance with the Ripper mystery into a book would follow suit in "selling some sizzle."

I am also very grateful for the Casebook itself, and to those who have brought it to the world, and sustain such a wonderful resource.

My gratitude extends to Mr. Ryder for allowing me to post about 1888 on this forum. In that, I hardly think it gentlemanly to insult Mrs. Ryder. Especially since she is one of the driving forces behind the Casebook.

I am aware of the privilege I have to post here and I am grateful. I have nothing but respect for those who have worked to create this site and keep it going through thick, thin, and total crash.

I am also happy to find a place where my years of reading about the Ripper isn't looked upon as a reason to be excused from a conversation.
