  • Impressed? By whom?

Looking at police activity and in light of their record, I wonder which of the policemen in your opinion deserves the most credit, for a bunch of crimes that remain unsolved? Who comes out of it best?

    best wishes

Certainly not Abberline. PC Smith deserves mention for being attentive enough to have provided a description of a Ripper victim with a potential killer. I don't believe this man WAS Stride's killer, but Smith's observance deserves mention.

Inspector Reid deserves mention for not immediately rejecting Pearly Poll's position or lack therof in the Tabram murder...waiting a full 6 weeks before expressing his opinion that Poll's word was of little value to Inspector J. West....and demonstrating that the police were concerned substantially more about the crimes than many modern Ripperologists give them credit for.

Likewise, members of H Division, for offering to provide a cash reward around the same time Samuel Montagu MP did...but with a lot less fanfare.

            Howard,

That is why I put in "none of the above" in the poll...deliberately with the names mentioned above, leaving out others.

            best wishes

I just realized this was a poll and not just a thread. ha ha. I don't think I can vote on those choices, though.

I decided to vote for Swanson. He had a big job on his hands, seems to have acquitted himself well, and appears to have been very thorough in his work.

I suspect, however, that the real answer lies among the unsung, and largely unnamed, chaps at ground level.

i think the city police did a far better job on the mitre square murder than the met did on all of the others combined.

Well the majority of the multitudes are dumber than rocks so I wouldn't be surprised.

I think I have to agree, but...
How do think they would have coped with the whole series?

It would certainly have given Henry Smith more to elaborate on!
