  • Why JTR?

Throughout history, there have been plenty of serial killers who have killed far more people than Jack but why is the world fascinated with this mystery man? What is so attractive about the Whitechapel Murderer that there are killers would have mock names such as the French Ripper, the Düsseldorf Ripper, the Camden Ripper and even Jack the Stripper ? What is the fascination with the demented soul(as he/she is profiled as) that there are tens of books, movies, plays, and even a convention that surround and focus on this being that appeared for a season?

Okay, just wanted to flash a little writing finesse but serious what is the reason that people and personally, you all, are interested in the infamous JTR?

    Jack

Hello Sarah. One thing that has caused the phenomenon of which you speak is the fact that he was not caught. Add to this the "hype" generated by the press and the "taunting" hoax letters, and he has taken on nearly superhuman status. This was likely exacerbated by lumping some disparate murders into a "homogeneous" whole.

I might observe here that--and I won't say this too loudly--I have serious doubts that there WAS a Jack the Ripper. I am inclined to think that there were 3 hands in the C5. Not exactly what one might wish to hear. (Careful, will you. You must learn to duck the rotten vegetables.)

    The best.

Oh! Please do not say that out loud! You might be hanged at Old Bailey for that...haha!

Another question: Do you think it is because of JTR that other serial killers followed suit with the letters and attention-whore personality to reach his status?

        Jtr

To start I need to correct you, we are not at all facinated with the man or what he did. I personally dispise Jack the Ripper. What we enjoy doing is trying to find more of what our curious minds dont know, to help us remember the women killed by the man. We all have our own personal opinion of who Jack was and who exactly he killed. As lynn says she believes there wasnt a serail killer, I however believe the man we know today as "Jack the Ripper" killed 6+ women. We all are facinated with crime, serial murders, and anything like that. The reason JTR was so infamous is because his killings went international. The ripper letters were found in newspapers in remote locations like australia within the hours of the killings. News traveled fast then as it does now, so the whole world knew the infamous name JTR and his deeds. It is such a compelling mystery today because of how much has been lost in time, the numerous suspects, and just the image of a caped man with a top hat standing in a swirling fog in londons east end streets. All the myths surrounding the man, all the theorys, one cant help but to be interested.

happy holidays and welcom to the casebook.

        Washington Irving:

"To a homeless man, who has no spot on this wide world which he can truly call his own, there is a momentary feeling of something like independence and territorial consequence, when, after a weary day's travel, he kicks off his boots, thrusts his feet into slippers, and stretches himself before an inn fire. Let the world without go as it may; let kingdoms rise and fall, so long as he has the wherewithal to pay his bills, he is, for the time being, the very monarch of all he surveys. The arm chair in his throne; the poker his sceptre, and the little parlour of some twelve feet square, his undisputed empire. "

          faux pas

Hello Sarah. It is quite possible that some SK's did.

Yes, one could be hanged for such a faux pas. Luckily, JTR is only a hobby with me, not a business pursuit. So I have no axe to grind and nothing to lose--except my sanity. And it's FAR too late for that.

          The best.
